Thoughts on This Week’s In-home Releases
As we begin to see award season films released on in-home video before the Oscars next weekend, we lead this week with Pixar’s latest animated feature, Coco, one of 2017’s best-reviewed films. Coco broke Pixar’s recent streak of underwhelming features and sequels (something the company had avoided for so many years, but succumbed to with Finding Dory, Cars 3). The film was original, emotional, and had stunning animation.
Continuing with awards-season pictures, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri comes to 4K Blu-ray. From reviews, the film has powerhouse performances from Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, and Sam Rockwell.
Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express boasted an all-star cast (Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Daisy Ridley, and Judi Dench to name a few). A remake of the 1974 film, it was a success at the box office and was received well with critics. Branagh is on a hot streak in both acting and directing. I enjoyed the mystery aspect, something that is lacking in a lost of contemporary films.
Finally, Disney is releasing their Diamond Edition of Lady and the Tramp. One of the most celebrated animated movies of all-time, it is a classic in the Disney cannon and is worth an addition to any collection.
