13 Going on 30 Stars Reunite on Screen in The Adam Project

The stars of 2004’s hit comedy 13 Going on 30, Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo, have reunited for an upcoming film called The Adam Project.

When Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo created fun chemistry together almost 18 years ago in 13 Going on 30, it was instant magic that translated to nice box-office returns ($57 million domestic) and audience satisfaction (an “A-” CinemaScore grade). Now, coming together again to star in the new film starring Ryan Reynolds, The Adam Project, the two stars jokingly discussed the possibility of getting a sequel made. Ruffalo thinks it would be a “great time” and Garner suggested that it be called 50 Going on 80. In all seriousness, however, that may just be wishful thinking on the two movie stars’ parts. That ship has probably sailed but it’s a cute concept to imagine.

In The Adam Project, Garner and Ruffalo will play a married couple whose son Adam Reed (played as an adult by Ryan Reynolds) travels through time to save the future. Ironically enough, 13 Going on 30 was a time travel movie of sorts where Garner’s 30-year old character, Jenna, was imagined and lived in by her 13-year old self. In that movie, she forms a relationship with Ruffalo’s character, Matty, who was her 13-year old male friend imagined as his older self. The big hooks of the film included its high concept story line (reminiscent of Big), the use of candies called Razzles in a cute way and a key scene where characters dance to Michael Jackson’s song, “Thriller.”

13 Going on 30 was a mild critical success, for the most part and has a current Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 65%. Jennifer Garner launched her comedy career in the hilarious film after having played more serious roles such as her juicy lead part in the dramatic television series, “Alias.” She also played action roles in movies like Elektra and Peppermint. She also recently returned to comedy with Yes Day and secured a deal with Netflix for more movies as a result. Her co-star Ruffalo went on to secure nominations for his work in films and TV parts. He earned an Academy Award nod for his work in the dramatic 2015 film, Spotlight and other earlier films as well such as The Kids Are All Right. His television acclaim includes receipt of a Golden Globe and an Emmy for his part in I Know This Much Is True.

The Adam Project is slated to show on Netflix and is directed by Shawn Levy who previously directed the recent Ryan Reynolds comedy Free Guy. It will be great to see Garner and Ruffalo back together again even if their roles aren’t as big as they were in the 2004 comedy. They had a great chemistry back then and viewers are greatly anticipating seeing them work together in another film.
