A John Candy Documentary is Moving Forward

Screen legend, John Candy, is going to be honored with a documentary about the long deceased comic actor’s life.

Ryan Reynolds and Colin Hanks have quite an interesting project brewing. Reynolds’ company, Maximum Effort, will be putting together a documentary on comic genius John Candy’s life.

Candy died unexpectedly in 1994 but had left behind a comic legacy of movies that are among the most funny comedies of the 1980’s. Some of those movies include Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Spaceballs, and, arguably, Candy’s most enjoyable film role of all-time, Uncle Buck. Candy frequently collaborated with the 1980’s teen movie king, John Hughes. Candy’s role in the box-office smash, Home Alone, may have made it his highest grossing film even though Candy had just a small role in it.

John Candy’s son and daughter confirmed the news of the upcoming documentary film. Jennifer, the late actor’s daughter, and Chris, the late actor’s son, appear to be giving the project their full support. According to sources, the filmmakers will have access to John Candy’s old video footage archives which will be heartwarming to see as it will remind one of the great talent and charisma which this actor possessed during his prolific career.

Many people related to Candy’s character in Planes, Trains and Automobiles–Del Griffith. That character, a homeless traveling salesman, was so effortlessly portrayed with warmth by Candy that it was one of his most cherished roles of all-time. Funnyman Steve Martin played opposite Candy in that R-rated comedy which was also one of the most hilarious movies of the 1980’s.

It was Uncle Buck in 1989, however, which gave Candy his most juicy lead role and that’s the one that many fans deem his finest hour.  As the titular character of the film, a compulsive gambler, Candy portrayed a man who must grow up while watching his nieces and nephew after tragedy strikes their family. The movie is known best for the scene where Candy’s character comically goes after a boyfriend who is not sincere to Candy’s niece in the film, Tia (who was wonderfully played by Jean Louisa Kelly). Uncle Buck was a great vehicle for the actor to strut his comic stuff.

Colin Hanks’s dad, Tom Hanks, appeared with Candy in both Splash and Volunteers in the mid-1980’s. It’s only appropriate for Colin to be involved in honoring Candy’s legacy by being involved with the production of what will surely be a great documentary that will display moments of Candy’s personal and professional life and will be nostalgic to fans of the beloved actor. Ryan Reynolds released the news of the forthcoming documentary on Twitter in correlation with the 4K re-release of the hit comedy, Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
