Reflecting on the Films of Funnyman Matthew Perry

Matthew Perry of “Friends” has passed away at age 54 due to drowning but the comic actor has left behind a body of hilarious cinematic performances.

It has sadly been revealed that Matthew Perry has drowned in a Jacuzzi at his L.A. home and has officially been pronounced dead. He was more than just Chandler on “Friends.” Matthew Perry was a very charismatic actor who had made some really funny romantic comedies throughout his years as an actor. Although they were only occasionally hits at the box-office, Perry showed audiences his tremendous charm in many of these films.

Perry got off to an interesting start in the Tony Danza-starring teenage comedy movie, She’s Out of Control in 1989. Although he was cast in a part much different than how we’d come to know him, that film officially put him on the funny movie scene.

In 1997, at the height of his tremendous “Friends” television success, Perry starred with Salma Hayek in the very enjoyable romantic comedy, Fools Rush In. The pair of stars had some nice chemistry together which helped keep the movie’s light story afloat. That movie grossed about $29 million at the domestic box-office which was enough to put Perry on the map as a leading man.

Perry and the late Chris Farley appeared in a box-office disappointment called Almost Heroes in 1998. Perry and Farley made for a fun team in a non-romantic comedy movie which clearly was made for the stars’ fans rather than for the critics.

The next year, Perry starred opposite Neve Campbell in 1999 in another box-office disappointment, Three to Tango which was a charming romantic comedy that proved to be entertaining despite its low ticket sales. A year later in 2000 when he appeared opposite movie star Bruce Willis in The Whole Nine Yards, Perry’s luck changed. That movie was a bona-fide hit, earning about $57 million domestically which was enough to inspire a sequel four years later, The Whole Ten Yards.

In-between those two aforementioned movies, he made Serving Sara with a huge sex symbol at the time Elizabeth Hurley. It was a cute comedy that had a quick box-office run but was nevertheless satisfying for fans of the actor. Perry got to star in another major hit in 2009 when he played the older Zac Efron in 17 Again which made a solid $64 million domestically.

Perry struggled with some major addictions and wrote about them in his recent memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir. Kirkus Reviews believed the book was strictly for Perry fans but his fans did enjoy reading it. Perry did a major interview on television about the memoir which revealed the dark side of the actor’s real life. It is certain playing Chandler on “Friends” was the most amazing work Perry achieved in his career. His comic timing was always nothing short of impeccable on the show. He will truly be missed.
