Woody Allen-Style Credits Add to After the Hunt’s Controversy

Luca Guadagnino‘s new tense drama, After the Hunt, has been revealed to feature Woody Allen-style credits as if it wasn’t already controversial enough with its very analytical sexual harassment story line.

Set to screen at the New York Film Festival this fall, After the Hunt, has already been screened at the Venice Film Festival where it has played a bit like a can of worms, opening up plenty of debates from viewers regarding the movie’s volatile topics. Woody Allen-inspired credits are showcased in the movie which will simply make things even more complex when it comes time to discuss the specifics of the film’s layered plot. Luca Guadagnino (Queer), director of the new picture which showcases Julia Roberts, has spoken out about the choice to use the same font and style of Woody Allen’s film’s credits which includes the use of old-time music.

Roberts likes the fact that the new picture is stirring up conversations, and I think that’s what any great film should aspire to do. The use of the credits Guadagnino has employed in his new Roberts-starrer is perfectly aligned with creating the types of conversations great Woody Allen movies like Blue Jasmine used to inspire.

Of course, there’s the history of Allen who had been accused of abuse himself throughout his career although the authorities cleared Allen’s name of any wrongdoing through a thorough investigation. It is almost certain the use of the Allen-style font and old school jazz music will play like gangbusters at the New York Film Festival for both those who believe Allen is innocent and beyond. That’s because Allen was pretty much always a New York filmmaker and his movies were usually probing and thought-provoking. After the Hunt is certainly in that vein and will allow the viewer to remember the allegations brought up against Allen and also remember that there are three sides to every story: The two arguments presented and the truth.

After the Hunt co-stars Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri in the story of a college professor (Roberts) with a distinct past who is drawn into a harassment situation with a colleague that explodes beyond a reasonable doubt. We remember Allen’s accusations and will appreciate the style of the great filmmaker as well thanks to the reminder the credits of Guadagnino’s new film displays. Allen may well be innocent, but great films like his always left questions as to why certain plot details occurred during them. It’s the mark of Allen as a filmmaker whose work has inspired Guadagnino above all else. That’s the reason for the homage.

Blue Jasmine featured enough heavy themes and complex issues to be one of the best fairly recent Allen films and After the Hunt, though it has received mixed reviews, will certainly stir up some hot topics this fall at film festivals and beyond. Guadagnino’s Queer was at the NYFF last year and certainly caused conversations after its screening. Expect After the Hunt to have people buzzing all around Lincoln Center at the NYFF and beyond when the film is officially released.
