AFTER THE HUNT (2025): Luca Guadagnino’s Julia Roberts Starrer Set to Open the 63rd New York Film Festival
After the Hunt to Open New York Film Festival
Luca Guadagnino‘s suspenseful drama featuring Julia Roberts, After the Hunt, will open the 63rd annual New York Film Festival.
This year’s New York Film Festival will begin with a deep, probing drama from Amazon MGM and filmmaker Luca Guadagnino titled After the Hunt. Julia Roberts is expected to be back at the top of her game in this new film which is set to screen in Venice this year as well. The New York Film Festival will be the North American premiere of After the Hunt which is expected to be one of the most intriguing movies of the festival this year.
Alice Tully Hall in upper Manhattan will be the venue at the New York Film Festival where After the Hunt will have its North American debut. Just last year, Guadagnino had the controversial Queer shown at the NYFF. Queer was one of the most debated films of the 2024 festival and featured Daniel Craig at his best. While After the Hunt appears to be a little more mainstream than Queer, expect the response to be just as heated for the new film given its hot topic saturated plot.
Julia Roberts is featured in the new Guadagnino picture as a Yale philosophy professor who must come to terms with a PhD candidate (Ayo Edebiri of Opus)’s accusations of sexual misconduct against Roberts’ character’s colleague who is played by Andrew Garfield. This premise is enough to stir up debate and the film promises to push a lot of buttons as it explores a topic which may be controversial, but will, above all else, surely be thought-provoking. Setting itself at an Ivy League school will make the film one of the more intelligent semi-mainstream offerings this fall as it has its audience question whether or not Garfield’s character is guilty of the sexual assault accusations that are brought against him in the picture.
Roberts is coming off a terrific part in the Netflix movie Leave the World Behind, which also featured a topic that stirred up a lot of debate- the end of the world. In After the Hunt, Roberts’ work is highly anticipated this year and the actress is destined to be in top form for this particular role while Ayo Edebiri is certainly expected to be holding her own beside Oscar-winner, Roberts, for this compelling and dramatic film that puts Guadagnino back in the driver’s seat again to tell yet another story that is sure to have audiences buzzing at the conclusion. Last year, Queer stirred up debates outside Lincoln Center. Expect history to repeat itself at the NYFF. After the Hunt will open in select theaters October 10th.
