Air Gets Glowing Reviews at South by Southwest Film Festival

Ben Affleck‘s new movie, Air, has earned unanimously positive reviews since its premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival.

The true story of the origin of the Air Jordan Nike sneakers gets the big screen treatment with director Ben Affleck’s latest film, Air. This film has an all-star cast and premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival to rave reactions leading to the movie’s current, very impressive 100% approved Rotten Tomatoes score.

The last time Matt Damon got together with Affleck when they starred together in the prestige project, The Last Duel in 2021, the result yielded an 85% Rotten Tomatoes score. But, the movie fizzed out quickly with an okay “B+” CinemaScore grade accompanying a paltry $10 million domestic gross. Amazon’s theatrical release, Air, is probably hoping to make at least that much money in Air‘s opening weekend alone. It will open on April 5th.

The critical response to Air hints that it could be a crowd-pleaser that could play well at the box-office all spring long. It was smart for Affleck to get back behind the camera because the actor/filmmaker knows how to make great movies. His amazing picture, Argo, made a splash at the Oscars shortly after it was released in 2012. There’s no reason to doubt that Air could have the potential to soar at next year’s Academy Awards at this particular point in time.

Affleck and Damon (who has the lead role in Air) wrote and starred in a Best Original Screenplay Oscar winner, 1997’s Good Will Hunting. When they came on to the scene with the Academy Award win, it was predicted the stars would have a bright future and that prediction was correct, for the most part. However, Damon didn’t win the Best Actor Oscar for Good Will Hunting and it was thought he’d have many future chances to win back then but he still hasn’t won. Could his role in Air finally yield him the gold trophy for Best Actor? If the terrific reviews hold up, you never know.

The supporting cast in Air can’t be beat. Jason Bateman, Chris Tucker, Viola Davis, and Marlon Wayans are all in this new picture. The smart money is that Viola Davis will be the one who stands a chance at an Oscar nod out of the supporting players. She was just snubbed for an Academy Award nod for The Woman King. She has the juicy role of Michael Jordan’s mother in the new Affleck-directed picture. It’s a no-brainer to position Davis as an early front runner for Best Supporting Actress.

Air just feels like it could be the surprise sleeper hit of the spring and resurface next Oscar season as word of mouth is likely to be phenomenal for the movie. Look for this movie to score big theatrically with at least a $50 million final domestic box-office gross. Damon and Affleck could pull off the comeback story of 2023 and make Air another Good Will Hunting-type success story.
