Alien: Romulus 2 Will Not Have Fede Álvarez Back in Director’s Chair
It has been said that filmmaker Fede Álvarez has passed on the opportunity to helm the upcoming Alien: Romulus sequel which the director helped write.
Fede Álvarez will produce the forthcoming Alien: Romulus sequel alongside series creator, Ridley Scott, but Álvarez won’t be in the director’s chair this go-around. That’s not to say he did anything wrong with the first Alien: Romulus movie from 2024 which was a smashing success by any standard. It made $350 million worldwide with over $100 million of that total coming from domestic ticket sales. It also earned a “B+” CinemaScore grade which was an improvement over the marks for some other Alien films such as Alien: Covenant, a film which scored only a “B.”
According to IMDb, the page for the upcoming sequel has the star of the first Alien: Romulus movie, Cailee Spaeny, back in the cast as the lead again. That prospect gives off serious Sigourney Weaver vibes as Spaeny may be taking over the type of role Weaver had in the first four Alien pictures. Can Spaeny’s character, Rain, become the next Ripley (the role Sigourney Weaver made famous)? We shall see. Also, keep in mind that when the original Alien switched directors from Ridley Scott to James Cameron for the sequel, Aliens, the result was a financial and critical blockbuster. Aliens made $131 million worldwide in 1986 box-office dollars and scored a straight “A” CinemaScore. Those financial numbers improved upon the original Alien‘s box-office gross by over $20 million.
Álvarez will still have his stamp firmly placed on the new Alien: Romulus sequel regardless of whether or not he will be in the director’s chair. He helmed great horror movies like the original Don’t Breathe and a remake, Evil Dead. It was his work on Alien: Romulus, though, that officially proved he could do big budget horror science-fiction in a way that he could seriously compete with the genre big boys like Ridley Scott, himself, and the great James Cameron. The first Alien: Romulus holds an impressive 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes at the present time.
Whereas Alien: Romulus was a nice sized hit for 20th Century Studios, it is likely that the studio is hoping for even bigger numbers for the follow-up movie that is brewing. Spaeny has also gotten a much bigger following on her side ever since Alien: Romulus was released a few months after A24’s hit, Civil War. Once those films started streaming at home, many more people noticed that Spaeny is an action heroine to contend with in every way. Hopefully, she will be a big part of the follow-up Alien: Romulus sequel film.
Right now, at home, Alien: Earth is sizing up some nice streaming numbers if anybody needs a quick Alien fix before the release of Alien: Romulus 2 which isn’t coming out anytime soon being that a director has not been selected for it as of yet.
