The next Alien picture is going to be directed by Fede Alvarez and is intriguingly titled Alien: Romulus. It will feature a cast that showcases two female turns by young rising stars, Cailee Spaeny and Isabela Merced. While Merced is from the family-friendly, Dora and the Lost City of Gold film, don’t expect a family affair when it comes to the latest Alien picture, however. Alien: Romulus is shaping up as an August 2024 release to keep an eye on with an unveiling date of August 16, 2024.

Fede Alvarez is known for 2013’s Evil Dead picture. While 2017’s Alien: Covenant made only $74 million domestically, it scored $166 million internationally. It only earned a “B” CinemaScore mark, but since seven years will have passed between that film and the release date of Alien: Romulus, it seems like a reboot could just be what is necessary to revitalize the franchise. Some people thought the 1992 David Fincher movie, Alien 3, would have put a nail in the series’ coffin with its “C” CinemaScore and horrible ending but here we are 30 years later and the franchise is still alive and well.

It may be true that Alvarez is an intriguing filmmaker but it will take a minor miracle for the new film to live up to James Cameron’s 1986 masterpiece, Aliens. With Sigourney Weaver long gone, Alien: Romulus‘s success will depend heavily on Spaeny and Merced’s on-screen personas. Does one of them (or both of them) have the potential to be the next Sigourney Weaver. 20th Century Studios would sure like to hope so.

You may be asking who, exactly, Cailee Spaeny is. She is an indie actress with a tremendously winning personality who shone in the quirky gem, How it Ends back in 2021. This recent role is a giant leap forward for Spaeny’s career. This new Alien film could pair her up with Merced in such a way that the success of the new movie will depend on both performers, equally. Merced has already proven herself able to carry an adventure yarn playing “Dora the Explorer” on the big screen and will now showcase her talents in a more adult-themed scare fest/action/adventure/horror picture.

Alien: Romulus is expected to bring the initially acclaimed science fiction franchise back to life. Sure, there were those pesky Alien vs. Predator movies too which were the least interesting movies of the Alien films collection. Fede Alvarez proved he could work wonders with the small budget horror movie, Don’t Breathe, and, now, he will have a much bigger budget to work with to prove he has what it takes to make a big summer blockbuster. Alien: Romulus will have to earn at least $90 million to top Don’t Breathe‘s domestic box-office take.
