Ocean’s Eleven Prequel Moving Forward into Production

An upcoming Ocean’s Eleven prequel movie is slated to be heading forth into production and it will feature two of the stars of this summer’s expected hit, Barbie.

When a star-studded remake of 1960’s Ocean’s Eleven opened in 2001, it yielded some impressive box-office results. That 2001 smash-hit starred Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Matt Damon and Julia Roberts, to name a few. Two more sequels came out in 2004 and 2007: Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen, respectively. Then, it took over 10 years for another Ocean’s picture to come out. It was a female-led picture which featured Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock: Ocean’s Eight. Now after another five years, Warner Bros. is turning to the trusted franchise for another entry which will be a prequel with different cast members.

Being cast in the Europe-set, 1960’s prequel film are Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. These two will be fresh off Greta Gerwig’s Barbie which was made for Warner Bros. as well. While Jay Roach will be making the new Ocean’s movie, it is the cast which has piqued everybody’s interest. Robbie and Gosling are just two of the cast members so far, though, and their exact roles are unspecified as of yet. The new Ocean’s picture will start going into production in June before Barbie‘s box-office grosses are even revealed.

Ocean’s Eleven from 2001 made $183 million domestically. Ocean’s Twelve took a bit of a nose-dive from the first picture but still made $125 million. Ocean’s Thirteen was pretty much on a par with the second movie and made $117 million. Ocean’s Eight, however, earned a hefty $140 million domestically and proved there was still interest left in the franchise even after all those passing years.

CinemaScore grades were almost all the same for the previous Ocean’s movies. Three of them received a “B+” with Ocean’s Twelve being the only one to get a different score. It got a “B-.”

Margot Robbie is getting a head start on the summer movie season with a star-studded ensemble comedy in which she is appearing: Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City. That film opens June 16th and may have helped Robbie get ready for the new Ocean’s movie which should be another large ensemble movie like Asteroid City.

While America may not have seemed to be begging for an Ocean’s Eleven prequel, the country may be doing so after Barbie is unveiled because audiences will probably want to see Robbie and Gosling together again very soon. Ideally, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie comedy movie will be a great way for both Robbie and Gosling to strut their talents to the world. Robbie may just end up with one Hollywood hit (Barbie) grossing around $240 million and an indie-hit grossing about $45 million (Asteroid City). The forthcoming Ocean’s Eleven prequel will reveal more cast members soon.
