Ryan Gosling Gets Backlash Over New Role

Ryan Gosling is starring in the summer’s most anticipated comedy, Barbie, and has responded to those who have claimed that he is not a good fit for his role.

Ryan Gosling is going to be “Ken” in the new movie by Greta Gerwig, Barbie, but some folks think he’s too old and just not right for the part. When #NotMyKen started trending online, Gosling was said to be inappropriate for his new role. Well, more or less anyway. Oscar-nominated Gosling responded to critics of his new film character. He pretty much stated that if you don’t want to play with his “Ken,” there are other “Kens” to play with. Excellent point.

From the trailers for Barbie, audiences can see that there is more than one Barbie and more than one Ken in the new film. In fact, there are several other variations on both of these characters which originated as dolls from Mattel. Gosling’s take is a clever one on Ken judging from the scenes we’ve seen so far from the upcoming, Barbie. How could you not laugh when Ken wants to go over to the main Barbie (Margot Robbie)’s house one evening? Perhaps, Gosling’s detractors are taking things a bit far. Plus, Gosling looks pretty darn good in his role, judging from the hairstyles and makeup which have been given to him for his role in the picture.

Did anybody really care about “Ken,” though? That’s the question that Gosling brought into light in a recent interview. Gosling suggests not really. So, perhaps, the fact that Ken is starting to get attention (even if its negative) is a positive sign for the movie’s potential box-office prospects.

While Gosling took time off from Hollywood (four years, to be precise), he is coming back into the limelight with, perhaps, one of the most high-profile roles of the summer. Gosling is married to Eva Mendes and had taken the time off from the spotlight to be with Mendes and their daughters. While the actor treats his profession more like a job these days, his characterization of “Ken” could be one of the most wickedly funny roles of the summer and, perhaps, the whole year.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is one of the most highly anticipated movies of July and is set to open against Christopher Nolan’s tentpole film, Oppenheimer. The real surprise would be if Barbie becomes a tentpole film for Warner Bros. (where Nolan’s movies used to be made). That would have Gosling’s detractors feeling pretty silly and Barbie fans laughing all the way through the season and possibly even seeing the picture more than once in theaters.
