AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH (2025): The New James Cameron Action Sequel Extravaganza is the Lengthiest AVATAR Yet
New Avatar Sequel is Going to Be a Long Ride
Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment of James Cameron‘s Pandora franchise, will run a whopping 3 hours and fifteen minutes in length.
Everything is set for Avatar: Fire and Ash to follow in The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King‘s footsteps to clean up at this year’s Oscars. While it’s not quite as long as LOTR: ROTK, James Cameron’s Pandora saga is positioned to be an epic adventure, clocking in just a few minutes more than Avatar: The Way of Water. Avatar: Fire and Ash will officially run 195-minutes in length.
While a three-hour plus running time doesn’t necessarily suggest a film will definitely even come close to sweeping the Oscars (see: Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1), it’s a good indicator of the studio’s confidence in this particular Avatar project. No studio wants to lose money by losing showtimes (a longer film gets less time slots at the multiplex). However, Cameron has proven that his Avatar saga has the stamina to continue its success with the third picture in the franchise.
What is Avatar: Fire and Ash‘s biggest foe (besides losing audience members to bathroom breaks)? It is Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another. If Avatar: Fire and Ash has a true enemy, it’s Anderson and his film all across the board. That’s because it’s going to be a definite battle between Cameron and Anderson for Best Director. Anderson doesn’t have a trophy from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, yet. Cameron does (for Titanic). Do that math and see who you get for a win at next year’s Oscars ceremony.
Guillermo del Toro feels mainstream audiences aren’t quite ready for the large, grand themes of Avatar: Fire and Ash even though he seems very supportive of the film and of the franchise as a whole. He’s actually seen the new one, according to reports. Now, del Toro won’t be too supportive of Cameron’s threequel at this particular point in time because he’s actually third in line to get the Best Director Oscar at the next ceremony for his work on the very solid new Netflix adaptation of Frankenstein.
Could it be that One Battle After Another and Avatar: Fire and Ash split the two main trophies between them? For example, Best Picture goes to Avatar: Fire and Ash while Paul Thomas Anderson takes Best Director for One Battle After Another. I, for one, think there are pretty good odds that could happen.
Unless you’re prepared for a bathroom break which could cause you to miss the action in the new Avatar movie, I’d recommend a small Coke or Pepsi to drink while watching the picture which is due out on December 19th.
