BLACK TIDES: John Travolta Cast in Survival Thriller from Action Film Director Renny Harlin
Screen Legend John Travolta Set to Return to the Movies
Former box-office draw/movie star, John Travolta, is going to be appearing in a new film from director Renny Harlin called Black Tides.
John Travolta of Saturday Night Fever and Pulp Fiction fame is slated to return to the screen in a new movie, Black Tides, which is about “rogue orcas” attacking a family’s boat. Travolta has been appearing in very minor movies of late and the last time he donned a decent role was in the box-office bomb, Gotti. Black Tides will be directed by Renny Harlin who’s made great action pictures in the past such as Cliffhanger and The Long Kiss Goodnight.
Though the central premise will involve Travolta’s father character, Bill Pierce, trying to re-establish a bond with his daughter and grandson, the movie seems poised to be, at its core, a creature feature survival thriller with the orcas being plot-starters and bringing about chaos in the film’s intriguing story line. This new project is slated to begin filming at the end of the summer of 2025.
Harlin seems like he could be reliving his glory days with this new project. Harlin previously directed Deep Blue Sea in the late 1990’s, a movie which seems a bit similar in spirit to Black Tides. He recently made a horror film remake, The Strangers: Chapter 1, and Chapter 2 is on the horizon for an upcoming release as well.
Travolta has enjoyed a career which has spanned many decades. He started out as a “cool cat” in movies like Saturday Night Fever and Grease and re-established his glory with projects like Look Who’s Talking and Pulp Fiction, a picture which secured him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Travolta’s been in something of a slump this past decade with roles in lesser known, poorly reviewed films like I Am Wrath which was a disappointment for the actor’s action fans. Travolta also suffered the loss of his wife, Kelly Preston, in 2020. It now looks like Travolta is ready to return to the screen with a project worthy of his talents again that will satisfy his fan base.
Black Tides promises to be the type of movie to keep viewers on the edge of their seats as it should be filmed in such a way that it will feel authentic and suspenseful. Harlin was, at one time, one of our most prolific action picture directors and this new project should put him and Travolta back in the spotlight again. No news is available as to whether or not the upcoming film will be a big-screen release, but given Harlin’s involvement, it’s a definite possibility. John Travolta just might find success in his twilight years with his role in this upcoming picture. This survival movie will prove that Travolta is certainly “staying alive” in show biz despite the odds.
