Prequel to The Hunger Games Moves Forward as Butterfly

A greatly anticipated prequel to the The Hunger Games films will be going into production with the working title, Butterfly.

Suzanne Collins’ fairly recent 2020 literary work, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, is moving forth into production as a movie and the title currently being used for the picture is Butterfly. Late last summer, it was revealed that the hugely popular Collins book (which is a prequel to her immensely successful The Hunger Games series) would be made into a film by the studio Lionsgate. The premise of the story revolves around the early life of the eventually evil character of Coriolanus Snow who was played by Donald Sutherland in the previous pictures.

Calling Butterfly an origin story would be pretty accurate as it explores the beginning stages of the life of Coriolanus Snow starting when the character was just 18 years old. Snow becomes a mentor in the 10th Hunger Games in the tale and the development of the plot gets really interesting from there. It is unclear as of now who will be playing the younger Snow in the upcoming production.

Kirkus Reviews praised Collins’ 2020 book on which the new film will be based on with Kirkus saying, “The twists and heartbreaks captivate despite tragic inevitabilities.” This book focused on how Snow needed to win money to attend college which led him to becoming a mentor. Another character featured in the story was Lucy Gray Baird who’s a singer that becomes a very integral part of the story.

While there is plenty to be excited about with the new picture, the bar is set pretty high as The Hunger Games series (which started in 2012) starred the very acclaimed and talented (not to mention eventual Oscar winner) Jennifer Lawrence in the terrific role of Katniss Everdeen. Those previous films which featured Lawrence scored high audience grades with CinemaScore and made a fortune at the box-office. The lowest grosser in the series still earned $281 domestically (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2) while the highest (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) earned $424 million.

All eyes will be on Butterfly to see if the filmmakers can assemble a phenomenal group of actors to tell a story which many fans found extraordinarily fascinating as a book. Could Butterfly generate the crowds the previous The Hunger Games films did? We won’t know until at least late 2023 or early 2024, according to sources. In the meantime, you can read the book The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes to prepare yourself for Butterfly, the high-profile film adaptation which is stirring up quite a buzz in Hollywood.
