CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD (2025): Running Time Discrepancies Plague Upcoming Marvel Film

Running Time of New Captain America Movie Uncertain

Movie theaters are beginning to report a running time shorter than was expected for the new Marvel picture, Captain America: Brave New World.

Tickets may soon start being sold for Captain America: Brave New World as AMC Theaters revealed a running time of 118-minutes for the superhero movie. Could that be correct? The film opens on Valentine’s Day which is a month from today but the problem is that IMDb reports a running time of 2 hours and 15 minutes which makes the two possibilities regarding the movie’s length clash. With a production plagued by re-shoots and reports of disappointing test screenings, could the movie be short and not so sweet?

The real running time really shouldn’t have an effect on the way people judge the quality of the new Captain America movie. While the previous Captain America movies were all over two hours long, what’s a mere two minutes under two hours going to say about a picture’s overall ability to entertain? Well, some people were expecting another epic superhero movie and the word epic is usually associated with movies significantly over two hours.

It seems people are afraid that the new Captain America could end up becoming a The Marvels-style flop. But, regardless of the film’s quality, that’s not going to happen. That’s because Brave New World is opening on a holiday weekend and has been well-positioned for months by excessive marketing which has built up great anticipation to see the film. Even if it’s bad, it would still earn close to $100 million domestically (at minimum) on its holiday weekend in February. The movie would need to be horrible to bomb and it doesn’t look bad at all, judging from the previews.

I could be wrong, too. Perhaps, the mixed running time reports point to a bigger problem for the production. However, running time doesn’t guarantee a successful movie as I’ve pointed out. One of the most successful 2024 critical favorites is a movie called September 5 which runs around 90 minutes. So, don’t judge a film by its running time under any circumstances.

Captain America: Civil War earned $408 million domestically and totaled $1 billion in ticket sales worldwide. Don’t expect Marvel to not want to duplicate that success. They’ve been working overtime to ensure this new movie is a tentpole box-office smash and it’s still unlikely the film will either be a.) bad or b.) too short. And, if it is 118-minutes so be it. 2 hours and 15 minutes sounds more reasonable but who am I to determine a movie’s quality by its running time? Still, one must consider at least 10 of those minutes will probably be the ending credits.
