Kevin Smith’s Clerks III Picked up by Lionsgate

Kevin Smith is set to start making the next installment of Clerks which will be released by Lionsgate.

When Kevin Smith directed the 1994 black and white indie gem, Clerks, he was immediately deemed a film-making genius. With an initial budget of just $27,000 Smith made the quintessential film for people who had experiences working at a convenience store. That movie propelled him to stardom and led to Clerks II in 2006 which pleased its fans who rewarded the picture with an “A-” CinemaScore grade. Now, the worldwide rights of the next chapter in the much loved series have been acquired by Lionsgate.

Smith will again write and direct the upcoming third picture in the franchise. He also will be portraying his infamous Silent Bob character yet again. This project is is now in pre-production and is set to start filming in August. It will be shooting entirely on location–you guessed it–in New Jersey.

The principal cast from the previous two films will be onboard for the new movie. Jeff Anderson and Brian O’Halloran will be back as Randal and Dante who, as we left them at the end of the second picture, were starting a new chapter in their lives. Jay Mewes will be back as well portraying Jay, Silent Bob’s sidekick. Rosario Dawson, the most valuable player from the second movie, will also be onboard as Becky. Dawson gave one of her most memorable performances to date in the 2006 picture.

The new picture will revolve around Randal having a heart attack which leads him to enlist his friends to make a movie about his life back at the convenience store seen in the original movie.

The last time we saw Jay and Silent Bob in a film, it was 2019’s Jay and Silent Bob Reboot which only grossed $4 million just slightly more than the $3 million earned by the original Clerks. However with the addition of all the cast members and a compelling new story line, expectations are high for Clerks III. The 2006 Clerks II made a cool $24 million domestically, though, proving there’s a definite fan base to tap in to. All the fans who have found the film on video over the years will also be intrigued by the release of the upcoming third film in the series.

Whether or not Clerks III sets the big screen ablaze and does well at the box-office, it is bound to be a curiosity piece for fans who loved the previous pictures. More news will be revealed as the film starts shooting next month.
