Dustin Ferguson and Vida Ghaffari have something in common: each is considered, in his and her own ways, indie film esteemed notables. Ms. Ghaffari certainly is busy; with two films in progress and three others soon to go into the can, we can surmise she is both reliable and accountable, qualities worth their weight in gold to production teams. If there should ever be something like a ‘strongest link’ award, she and fellow performers of her ilk would be very likely contenders — unsung but not unappreciated. In Ferguson’s latest piece she plays the role of Nurse Mickey.

Ms. Ghaffari is one of Ferguson’s cast regulars, but she has also worked with director/producer Brandy Mason who, like Ferguson, counts among the indie maverick community with the better known pioneers like Robert Rodriguez, John Waters, Charles Band, Jim Wynorski, Stuart Gordon, and Rob Zombie, not to mention the grand-daddy of them all, Roger Corman.

Indie films of this stripe take on a special challenge in blending genres in a crass sort of way that pays tribute to film convention and propriety by snubbing them. Outrage, in some form or another, is the coin of this realm. Some of these movies do show a bit more finesse than others — the Evil Dead franchise, for example — but it’s there regardless of budget. And if we take the time to look closely enough, there is a venerable history behind them. The seminal James Whale film, The Old Dark House, is well worth a gander.

But Ms. Ghaffari also goes the extra mile when comes to generosity. She donates as much of her time and energy toward her craft as she does to charitable causes. For example, she is the recipient of community service awards from the City of Los Angeles, West Los Angeles and Panorama City, to name a few.

Writer/director Dustin Ferguson has carved out a reputation all his own in the indie community. Apropos to the genre, his shoots are quick, to the point, and either at or under budget. In Doll Killer 2, our blade wielding villain (wacko Charlie Crandall under the clown mask) had dispatched the heroine reintegrating into society after a lengthy stretch in the looney bin. Doll Killer then wanders off into the shadows, in search of the next installment. (Spoiler alert: It’s a slumber party.)

Ms. Ghaffari and Mr. Ferguson reunite with some buddies in Doll Killer 3. These include Jennifer Nangle (Archnado 2), Charles Chudabala (Apex Predator 2), Breana Mitchell (Demon Predator, Don’t Trick-or-Treat-Alone, etc.), Christine Twyman (Sharks N Da Hood, Space Sharks), and Doll Killer himself, Jarad Allen (Mega Ape, Amityville in the Hood, Ebola Rex). The film is in pre-production with no release date yet.
