A Sequel is in Development to a 2009 Horror Film

Sam Raimi has confirmed that ideas are circulating for a sequel to his 2009 hit horror movie, Drag Me to Hell.

When Alison Lohman (an up-and-coming actress when she made a splash in the 2003 Nicolas Cage film, Matchstick Men) teamed up with director Sam Raimi for the horror movie Drag Me to Hell, the film was considered a success and many people have anticipated a sequel for well over a decade. Now, the news is good for those fans of the first film as a sequel could be in the works if an idea is spot on the money. The 2009 movie, Drag Me to Hell currently holds a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In Drag Me to Hell, Lohman played a bank worker who denies an unusual older woman a loan. This old lady puts a curse on Lohman’s character and, soon, all hell breaks loose. Quite literally. Since the release of Drag Me to Hell, its co-star Justin Long has become the go-to guy for a horror movie star. He just last September appeared in back-to-back scary movies, Barbarian and House of Darkness. Long first came on to the horror film scene with the 2001 hit/terrifying movie, Jeepers Creepers.

In 2019, Rami admitted he was open to a sequel to his 2009 cult classic. The original Drag Me to Hell made an impressive $42 million domestically at the time of its release. It also added another $48 million in revenue overseas. Some CinemaScore audiences had a problem with the movie’s dark ending and the film wound up with just a “B-” CinemaScore grade but the majority opinion these days is that the ending fit the tone of the film.

Sam Raimi also has a film which he produced opening this week called 65. It looks like a dinosaur science fiction movie and stars the ever popular Adam Driver. That movie could face some stiff competition from a “little” horror movie called Scream VI but Raimi films usually carry their own weight whether they are huge hits or not. Raimi’s (arguably) best film to date, A Simple Plan, only earned $16 million domestically but is one of the most successful of his works from a critical standpoint. 65 looks likely to earn at least $40 million during its domestic run after it is released this Friday.

While it is uncertain if Alison Lohman or Justin Long would participate in a Drag Me to Hell sequel, the thought of them doing so is quite interesting. The writers would have to come up with some original ways to bring Lohman’s character back into the movie but if anybody can do unique, it’s Raimi and the various team of writers he has worked with over the years.
