Thoughts on This Week’s In-home Releases

The home releases of Infinity Pool, Living, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Linoleum, A Quiet Place, True Grit, 65, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie are the most noteworthy releases (and pre-orders) on home video and streaming services this week.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed Infinity Pool and had this to say about the film:

FilmBook Writer David McDonald reviewed Living and had this to say about the film:

Living is something of a breakthrough for director Oliver Hermanus, who has so far concentrated on themes specific to his native South Africa, especially with respect to social issues relating to race, gender, and sexual orientation.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed Shazam! Fury of the Gods and had this to say about the film:

Director David F. Sandberg brings funnyman Zachary Levi back in the enjoyable action-packed extravaganza, Shazam! Fury of the Gods. This movie is not DC at its finest nor is it DC at its worst. It is DC at its most passable, however, as a great cast takes the stage in a film chock full of special effects, monsters and superheroes.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed Linoleum and had this to say about the film:

FilmBook Editor in chief Rollo Tomasi reviewed True Grit and had this to say about the film:

Joel Coen and Ethan Coen’s True Grit is a western more about its characters and their motivations than its action sequences. This is nearly the opposite of Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West where atmosphere, music, cinematography, and action were its most deliberate attributes.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed 65 and had this to say about the film:

Producer Sam Raimi helps bring an exciting, yet somewhat lackluster, science fiction action/adventure yarn to the screen with the new film, 65. Filmmakers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods do better directing this new movie than they did writing it. The script is basically enough for a movie half the running time of 65 but the creature effects are outstanding and save the movie from becoming a run-of-the-mill crash survivor picture.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and had this to say about the film:

2023 gets off to a shaky start for multiverse movies with the disappointing sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Paul Rudd, the film’s star, is always terrific but, unfortunately, this new movie gets bogged down in flat scenes that don’t really enhance the action despite the best of intentions.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed The Super Mario Bros. Movie and had this to say about the film:

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an enormously entertaining experience for fans of the Nintendo video games that were launched at least several decades back.
