Eddie Murphy Set to Receive the 51st AFI Life Achievement Award
Eddie Murphy Slated to Receive Life Achievement Award
Eddie Murphy has been selected to receive the 51st AFI Life Achievement Award on April 18, 2026.
Eddie Murphy has had a terrific career, including a time in the 1980’s where he was deemed, perhaps, the biggest cinematic box-office draw of the moment. With movies like Beverly Hills Cop, Trading Places and Coming to America, his movies typically raked in the cash at the box-office and when Murphy voiced the donkey in the Shrek films, viewers turned out to hear him in droves. Boomerang was another early fan favorite of his. Now, Murphy is being bestowed with the 51st AFI Life Achievement Award. It seems the American Film Institute is going to honor the work he has done which is highly respected, especially in the world of comedy where the actor has his roots and has, arguably, done his best work.
Starring on the humorous sketch show, “Saturday Night Live,” helped propel Murphy to stardom and a recent documentary on Netflix called Being Eddie takes a look at the actor’s prolific career and his triumphs and life difficulties. That Netflix glimpse inside the funnyman’s life has netted a 75% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and Murphy’s fans seem to be enjoying it immensely.
Recently, Murphy stated that he wishes he appeared in some movies that he passed on. They include Ghostbusters, Rush Hour and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. These movies were all huge box-office successes. Ghostbusters was a global phenomenon, but Beverly Hils Cop was the movie he chose over it and that film worked out pretty well in the long term, launching him to stardom even further. Chris Tucker assumed the role Murphy didn’t play in Rush Hour while Bob Hoskins took the part in Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
Past recipients of the AFI Life Achievement Award include last year’s winner, Francis Ford Coppola and the likes of stars such as the late Diane Keaton and film music composer John Williams. This is a great honor for the funnyman Murphy who has had some ups and downs in his career. He had flops along the way such as Vampire in Brooklyn, but Murphy also appeared in solid performances in more dramatic films such as Dreamgirls. That role in the movie musical from 2006 scored Murphy an Oscar nomination and that nod almost got him the coveted award that year. Some consider the loss very disappointing and blame it on his work on the silly movie Norbit which was released right after Dreamgirls.
While Murphy may not regret the choices he made in retrospect, the decisions he did make shaped the career of a talented individual whose award from the American Film Institute is fully deserved.
