Fingernails is one of three projects featuring Luke that are currently filming.

The other two, entitled Miranda’s Victim and Horizon, crime drama and epic Western respectively, attest to Wilson’s versatility. But then, seeing any of the Wilson Boys on the screen is like a visit from an old friend. Luke launched his career along with those of his brother, Owen, and their long-time collaborator, Wes Anderson. Luke has also worked alongside Mike Judge as the “Average Joe” Bauers in the cult dystopian film, Idiocracy, which began life as a comedy but in the recent political landscape has become more prophetic than comedic. In a purely dramatic turn, he played the male lead, directed by the remarkable Reed Morano, in her much acclaimed film, Meadowland. Even a quick look at Luke Wilson’s C.V. tells us all we need to know about his dexterity on screen.

How Wilson will fit into the science fiction drama crafted by Greek director Christos Nikou leads to some interesting speculation. Fingernails is Nikou’s second shot in the director’s chair, with an impressive showing with his first one, Apples, in 2020. Akin to his present project, this first effort is also dramatic science fiction, but more speculative than dystopian. The twist involves a pandemic that wipes memory, leaving the hero among the number of persons ‘unclaimed.’ The premise is his journey in the rehab providing new identities.

Like his first effort, Fingernails does not deal in wholesale devastation of a culture. Instead, the conflict lies in researching one particular segment of human experience — romantic love — carried out by a ‘mysterious institute’ through the eyes of a new employee, investigating for reasons of her own. Fingernails is Nikou’s first English language feature.

In addition to Wilson, the spare but talented cast also includes actor/ musician Jessie Buckley (I’m Thinking of Ending Things) who portrays Anna, the hero, Jeremy Allen White (Shameless), Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek), and Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal).

Nikou has teamed up again with Stavros Raptis, his writing partner for Apples, and Sam Steiner (Morning). Nikou has assembled a powerhouse production group. His executive producer for Apples, Cate Blanchett, spearheads the group which includes Jerome Duboz (Parasite), Coco Francini (Mrs. America), Kevin Lafferty (Wednesday), and Andrew Upton (Carol). Fingernails is currently filming in Ontario, Canada. Apple is set to distribute the film, but no other details are available.
