FREAKY FRIDAY 2 (2025): Long-Awaited Comedy Sequel Features Original Cast Members and is Set to Play in Theaters

Freaky Friday 2 Will Play in Theaters and Reunites Old Cast Members
Disney‘s upcoming comedy sequel, Freaky Friday 2, will bring back much of the cast from the original 2003 remake and the forthcoming movie is set to show in theaters in 2025.
Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis (who is now an Oscar-winner) will be back for the sequel to their 2003 hit, Freaky Friday. And, although former director Mark Waters won’t be helming this time out, much of the cast from the previous picture will be coming back for the follow-up movie. Nisha Ganatra will be taking over directorial duties, as previously reported. This sequel will not premiere on Disney+ but will start off as a theatrical release instead.
Lohan’s character, Anna Coleman, is now a mom of her own in the story line for the sequel. Many of the other plot details have not yet been revealed but one can pretty much be assured somebody will switch places with someone and that chaos and hilarity will ensue.
The choice to release the sequel in theaters comes on the heels of the studio’s strategy to have previous sequels like Disenchanted premiere on Disney+. There is certainly a big following for Freaky Friday being that the story was once a popular children’s book. Thus, the decision to put the upcoming sequel in the movies in 2025 before streaming should prove to be a profitable one. In the past, though streaming movies were said to do OK, some Disney films didn’t get to measure up to their full financial potential.
A great cast has been reunited for the follow-up picture as well. Old pros like Mark Harmon and Lucille Soong are sure to be back in top form for the sequel. Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Rosalind Chao, Hayley Hudson and Stephen Tobolowsky will all be returning as well. This gives the film the opportunity to rekindle that magical feeling the first picture gave audiences in 2003. The 2003 remake with Lohan, Curtis and company grossed a very respectable $110 million domestically and $50 million overseas.
It was also reported that Julia Butters of Quentin Tarantino’s gem, Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood fame will have a juicy supporting role in the upcoming sequel as well. While we’re not sure who she’s playing, she could well be portraying Lohan’s daughter in the picture being that Butters is the biggest name of the new additions to the franchise’s supporting cast. Either way, Butters has proven herself opposite big stars in the past (Leonardo DiCaprio, Michelle Williams, etc.). Playing against Lohan and Curtis should be a walk in the park for her, especially considering she starred in films directed by the likes of Tarantino and Spielberg (The Fabelmans). Though original director Mark Waters may be missed, the cast of the upcoming sequel should make it a home run for Disney.
