Freaky Friday 2 is in Development Over at Disney

A sequel to the 2003 box-office smash hit, Freaky Friday, is said to be in the works from Disney almost 20 years after the first movie.

When the 2003 Freaky Friday remake was originally released, it brought with it one of Jamie Lee Curtis’s best performances. Now, some 20 years have passed, and Curtis is now an Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actress for her fine work in Everything Everywhere All at Once. The other star of Freaky Friday, Lindsay Lohan, is also quietly coming back into the spotlight with her Netflix movie deal. So, it’s as good a time as any for a sequel to the 2003 picture to come into fruition and Disney has agreed to put the follow-up movie into their slate of upcoming projects.

Jamie Lee Curtis talked about Freaky Friday 2 to the press while promoting her recent Halloween picture and it seems like Disney has taken the bait. The director of the first movie, Mark Waters, deserves to come back too but nothing has been confirmed as of yet as to the possibility of the filmmaker coming back to direct Curtis and Lohan in a sequel.

A lot has happened in 20 years as streaming is now a popular platform where hit movies are released. Disney Plus has put out sequels to some of their old films like Enchanted and Hocus Pocus with decent results. It wouldn’t be surprising if the upcoming movie was made for Disney Plus but it certainly has the potential to be a theatrical release as well.

Lindsay Lohan has a history of working with Disney. From The Parent Trap remake to Herbie Fully Loaded, the results have been mixed at the box-office with her earliest work grossing more than her more recent projects. Freaky Friday from 2003 was, in and of itself, a remake of an earlier movie. The picture centered on a mother and daughter who switched places as comic situations arose which were heartwarming and sincere as well. It would be really interesting to see how they will write the script for the new sequel. Jamie Lee Curtis was just perfect in the 2003 movie and would be even better now with 20 years more acting experience under her belt.

When Vanity Fair released a cover of talented young actresses in 2003, Lohan was among them. Lohan has been poised for a comeback for many years now and this project is the perfect opportunity for her to come back into stardom. If Mark Waters were to direct, it would be absolutely terrific for fans of the original 2003 movie. The 2003 Freaky Friday earned an “A-” CinemaScore grade and was one of the best movies that summer. It earned $110 million back then at the domestic box-office and another $50 million overseas.
