Greta Gerwig’s Narnia Film To Release on IMAX Screens

Greta Gerwig‘s untitled The Chronicles of Narnia film is set for a global 2026 IMAX theatrical release on November 26th, Thanksgiving Day.

Greta Gerwig is one of the most successful female directors of all-time so the fact that her take on The Chronicles of Narnia will be released theatrically worldwide is only just. Netflix rarely, if ever, releases their movies on the big screen unless they’re big-time Oscar bait projects. It remains to be seen whether this upcoming Narnia project will be a true blockbuster or genuine Oscar material but Netflix is doing right by it in that they’ve secured an IMAX unveiling for the hugely anticipated feature film.

This global release will be for about a few weeks and will happen before the project appears on the Netflix streaming service on Christmas Day, 2026. It is likely this theatrical run could extend beyond these introductory weeks if the film becomes as popular as people are anticipating it to be. Could the movie be in theaters and on Netflix both at the same time? Time will tell. Director Gerwig, who received a well-deserved Oscar nomination during her career, is also the mastermind behind the box-office bonanza, Barbie from 2023. It’s a definite possibility that she will have another hit on her hands with Narnia.

While the upcoming Narnia picture will be competing for IMAX screens around the same time as a new The Hunger Games picture, Gerwig’s movie has the potential to be just as strong a box-office contender itself. Netflix has made pictures that warranted theatrical releases before like The Irishman and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, however, the streamer has never really had a movie with the potential blockbuster status that Narnia has.  Thus, the IMAX release of the movie could flourish over the weeks prior to its Netflix premiere date.

Gerwig directed Academy Award nominated favorites like Ladybird and Little Women before she made her big box-office splash on the big screen with the hit Barbie. Narnia gives the director (who also acts) an opportunity to make a movie that fits right at home on a screen as big as an IMAX one. It’s undecided as to how good (or great) it will be but given its budget, Narnia promises to have wonderful cinematography and costumes that will look much more lavish on a larger theatrical screen than on a TV of any size. As we wait for the casting to be complete, keep Narnia on your 2026 calendar. It will play on about 1000 screens worldwide which is no small feat for a Netflix project.
