Netflix Seeks Greta Gerwig to Helm Narnia Movies

Greta Gerwig may be behind the camera of the Netflix adaptations of the popular The Chronicles of Narnia book series.

In 2018, Netflix garnered the rights to the immensely popular C.S. Lewis Narnia books. Now, although some of these books were adapted to the big screen to mixed success at the domestic box-office in the earlier part of the 2000’s, Netflix wants their shot at the adaptations and would like to enlist Academy Award-nominated director, Greta Gerwig. This filmmaker not only got nominated in 2018 for writing and directing the 2017 gem, Ladybird, but Gerwig also received an Oscar nomination for her work adapting the classic book Little Women to the screen in 2019. She certainly has a literary background and with the upcoming Barbie movie she’s directing, she should have the mainstream appeal factor down pat as well.

Three big budget movies were already made based on The Chronicles of Narnia books: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 2005, Prince Caspian in 2008 and Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 2010. The domestic box-office results on those three pictures were as follows: $291 million, $141 million and $104 million, respectively. The consecutive decline of box-office grosses as these adaptations progressed makes the films similar to the Fantastic Beasts franchise which also showed box-office plummets the more the series went on.

The Silver Chair and The Horse and His Boy never got off the ground as big screen films in the previous set of movies that were produced. Similarly, The Magician’s Nephew didn’t make it to the big screen either. The huge question mark hanging over the Netflix series of movies that are slated to be made is: Which film(s) will be made first? The ones that were previously produced or the ones that weren’t?

Greta Gerwig is a great filmmaker who also starred in the quirky comedies Mistress America and Frances Ha. She will be starring in White Noise, an upcoming Netflix movie that has “Oscar buzz” written all over it. All eyes are going to be on her forthcoming 2023 Barbie film which is going to star Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie. Gerwig is a director of the highest caliber and is certain to sustain enough audience interest in the new Barbie picture which could propel that film to become a box-office smash when it is finally released.

As for The Chronicles of Narnia series for Netflix, it’s crystal clear that if anyone can breathe new life into a franchise that was once considered stale, it’s Gerwig whose unique approach to movie-making is awe-inspiring almost every time she makes a picture. We’ll just have to see what two pictures Netflix asks her to make first out of the several books in the series that are slated for potential adaptations.
