John Carpenter Suggests That News Exists on Reboot of The Thing

It has been reported that horror filmmaker John Carpenter has received news on the possibility of a reboot of The Thing.

John Carpenter is a horror movie icon since the films he directed throughout his career were among the most popular scary pictures–especially during the late 1970’s and all throughout the 1980’s. It was recently reported that a Blumhouse reboot of his collaboration with Stephen King, Christine, is in the works while a reboot of Firestarter (another Carpenter/King collaboration) is going to be released as soon as this coming May. Now, a Blumhouse Productions film reboot of 1982’s Universal Pictures masterpiece, The Thing, is being discussed and while there’s no guarantee that it will happen, there is news that it might.

The Thing has always been one of the most frightening and successful movies Carpenter has made during his career. Unfortunately, a mediocre prequel was released in 2011 which was also called The Thing. That 2011 movie bombed at the box-office earning a paltry $16 million domestically which didn’t even equal the original 1982 film’s $19 million box-office take (keep in mind ticket price inflation as well which suggests fans of the original simply didn’t go once poor word of mouth hit). 2011’s picture received a bland “B-” CinemaScore grade from audiences and a rather anemic 34% Rotten Tomatoes approval rating. Some 11 years later, it’s time to give the 1982 picture the respect it deserves with a solid reboot and Blumhouse may be in the process of making it happen.

1982’s The Thing starred Kurt Russell in a film set in Antartica where a research team of scientists take in a dog which has the ability to take the shape of the people it kills. It’s not the dog’s fault, though, that it’s a monster. Rather it’s the alien creature which took over the dog who’s to blame as this “being” of sorts goes on a killing spree of people in the group of aforementioned scientists. This picture’s snowy atmosphere, gore and haunting music score added to the horror and made it a true winner. That movie, was, itself, a very loose remake of the 1951 Boris Karloff science fiction film, The Thing (from Another World). Both pictures were also inspired by John W. Campbell Jr’s short book, Who Goes There?

The potential reboot of the 1982 picture would be terrific news for horror/science fiction fans if it moved forward into development and, eventually, production. However, at this point in time, John Carpenter is sworn to secrecy about the updates regarding the project. Maybe, good news will be secured if Firestarter ignites the box-office and Peacock when it is released this May. It has also been revealed that John Carpenter wouldn’t mind making a sequel to the 1982 movie, The Thing, as well. Time will tell the future of these proposed projects.
