Val Kilmer Dies of Pneumonia

One of the most prolific actors from the 1980’s and 1990’s, the incomparable Val Kilmer, has died of pneumonia.

Legendary performer, Val Kilmer, suffered from a throat cancer diagnosis which took him out of the limelight, but not before the acclaimed actor got to put together a resume of film work that would be impressive on any level, but even more so when you consider the variation of roles that the actor took on.

Kilmer played Jim Morrison, Doc Holiday and Batman all over the course of a few years in the 1990’s. That would be enough to make any actor stand-out, yet Kilmer’s mostly well-received work in the respective films, The Doors, Tombstone and Batman Forever was an example of how the hard-working actor made his stamp in the world of Hollywood early on in his career.

Kilmer came on to the scene as a Hollywood novice in comedic films like Real Genius and the goofy Top Secret! before it, but all bets were off when the actor played his iconic role as “Ice” in Top Gun opposite Tom Cruise. Kilmer appeared in Ron Howard’s big-budged film, Willow, in the late 1980’s which helped prove he could be a reliable action hero. Kilmer was also seen reprising his role as “Ice” in the 2022 blockbuster sequel to Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick, one of the most successful films of all time.

After playing Batman, Kilmer went on to play in the film, The Saint, in the late 1990’s and added another distinguished hit role to his already incredible resume. At the end of the 1990’s, Kilmer played opposite Oscar winner Mira Sorvino in the touching love story, At First Sight, which was based on a true story. By 2004, Kilmer was playing in mediocre films such as the big budgeted, Alexander, from 2004. It seemed the actor’s later roles, though good, were less splashy ones at the box-office than the parts he took on in the 1990’s.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, where Kilmer played opposite Robert Downey Jr., was one of Kilmer’s last memorable roles in a theatrical release other than, of course, Top Gun: Maverick in which the actor gave a stand-out supporting performance. A documentary called Val chronicled the actor’s difficult life in great detail for viewers who were interested in the man behind the iconic roles that defined him in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

Kilmer was also an artist and took the time in his later years to paint. A man of great talents, Kilmer was one of the biggest stars of the two decades that really highlighted his skills as an actor. To play Doc Holiday and Jim Morrison in the span of just a few years was simply astonishing. Those two parts would be what Kilmer would be remembered for most from an acting standpoint though Top Gun was the role that many mainstream movie-goers will never forget him for. Kilmer was a legendary performer who was dealt some tough blows in life, but stood strong in times that challenged him immensely. Kilmer was a wonderful talent, gone too soon.
