Ike Barinholtz in Talks to Play Elon Musk in Luca Guadagnino’s AI Satire ‘Artificial’ for Amazon MGM

Ike Barinholtz Artificlial Movie Casting News

Following his recent Emmy nomination for Apple TV+’s The Studio, Ike Barinholtz is reportedly in negotiations to portray tech magnate Elon Musk in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming feature Artificial, a comedic drama set against the backdrop of the modern AI landscape. The project, developed by Amazon MGM Studios, is being described as a satirical yet character-driven examination of artificial intelligence and the figures shaping its narrative.

Though specific plot details remain under wraps, industry sources suggest that Artificial will explore the turbulent events at OpenAI in late 2023. Most notably the rapid firing and reinstatement of CEO Sam Altman, a moment that laid bare the ideological rifts within the AI community. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but left the organization in 2018 due to philosophical disagreements, is expected to be a central figure in this dramatization of recent tech history.

Joining Barinholtz are Andrew Garfield, rising Russian actor Yura Borisov (Anora), and Cooper Koch, forming an ensemble that blends dramatic intensity with comedic range. The script, penned by satirist and former SNL writer Simon Rich, is being produced by David Heyman (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Jeffrey Clifford, and Jennifer Fox.

The casting of Barinholtz marks a compelling departure for the actor, best known for his work in comedy. However, his turn as Sal Saperstein in The Studio demonstrated a versatility that may serve him well in embodying one of the most polarizing figures of the tech age. With Guadagnino at the helm, known for infusing genre films with nuance and emotional depth, Artificial promises a sharp, possibly provocative examination of the human ego in an age increasingly defined by machines.
