Oscar Award-winning actor Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club, Suicide Squad) is screenwriter and tentative director Josh Boone’s (The Fault in Our Stars) first pick for the role of Lestat in the upcoming reboot of Ann Rice’s 1976 novel Interview with a Vampire. The role was first played by Tom Cruise in the 1994 original and again by Stuart Townsend in 2002’s Queen of the Damned. Boone tweeted a picture of Leto on May 4th with the caption ‘Lestat- there can only be one’ with the hashtag #JaredLeto.

Lestat ‘The Brat Prince’, is, like many of Rice’s vampires, vain, sexually ambiguous, carnal and cunning, and one of the most compelling characters of the series. The 1994 version has become a cult classic, the cast including Cruise alongside Brad Pitt (Louis),Christian Slater (Malloy) and a young Kirsten Dunst (Claudia). The movie was well received, highly praised for both its gothic fantasy and complex, emotionally turbulent characters, striking the right balance between narrative and vampiric gore.

Universal Studios and Imagine Entertainment bought the rights to Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles in 2014, and not much else was known besides Boone’s involvement until recently. Though Leto nor his publicity team has definitely confirmed that Leto will be playing the role, Boone has made his choice very clear.
