TRON 3: Garth Davis Will Direct Second TRON Sequel

The next sequel in Disney’s long-gestating TRON series is getting another jolt in the form of indie director Garth Davis. Davis, best known for directing the Oscar-nominated biopic Lion, has signed on to direct a new TRON film for Disney. This will be his first tentpole project at a major studio.

Not much is known about the film, as it is still in development and – technically – hasn’t been given the greenlight. However, Variety reports that it will not be a direct sequel to 1982’s original TRON nor its 2010 follow-up TRON: Legacy. Rather, it will be a new story set independently within the TRON universe.

A direct sequel to TRON: Legacy was in development until Disney pulled the plug on it in 2015. Then, in early 2017, the project revived itself when Jared Leto signed on to star in and produce the film, which at the time was tentatively titled Tron: Ascension. According to reports, that film’s script – written by Jesse Wigutow – is still the most recent draft.

There is speculation to suggest Disney’s reluctance to wholeheartedly greenlight a sequel is not out-of-line with its general approach to the property. Both Tron and Tron: Legacy received mixed critical reception, and only the former was a decent box office success. Disney even asked Tron: Legacy’s director Joseph Kosinski to shoot a test reel in 2008 to measure enthusiasm in the property (which at the time was nearly 30 years old) before committing to a sequel.

However, to quote Deadline’s Justin Kroll:

Davis coming on to the project signals the next installment may finally happen….[And] Davis’ involvement is a push in the right direction for the future of the franchise.

Leto, Justin Springer, and Emma Ludbrook are set to produce the film for Disney. No further cast, crew, nor production start date has been announced.
