Jared Leto Set to Play the Villainous Skeletor

Jared Leto has been cast in the upcoming Travis Knight Masters of the Universe movie which is slated to arrive at theaters on June 5, 2026.

You have to hand it to Jared Leto. His career has had more ups and downs than a roller coaster this past decade or so. From winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Dallas Buyers Club from 2013 to disappointing as the Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad to failing to succeed in a Marvel film called Morbius, Leto has seen it all. Now, the actor is banking that audiences will want to see a film adaptation of an old cartoon series, Masters of the Universe. Leto has been cast in the pivotal role of Skeletor in that forthcoming action picture.

Leto has, of course, been successful as an actor throughout his career. In 2021’s well-regarded House of Gucci, he made his comeback but the role he played in that movie didn’t yield the Oscar love he had probably been hoping for. Can Leto play the villain role he was always destined to play in the new Masters of the Universe film? There’s no doubt in my mind that Leto will pull it off but the reception of the movie will be hugely based on how well people remember the old cartoon and toys on which it is based.

In 1999, Leto appeared in the Brad Pitt action picture, Fight Club, but it took him a while to truly break out as an actor in the world of cinema. His role in the great Requiem for a Dream proved he could act but didn’t do much for him in terms of making him a big box-office draw. A role in 2005’s Lord of War opposite Nicolas Cage cemented Leto’s acting abilities which were further enhanced after his Oscar win in 2021’s The Little Things. Leto also appeared in Blade Runner 2049 in 2017.

Jared Leto is not the only high-profile name in the Masters of the Universe cast. Idris Elba will be playing Man-At-Arms. Alison Brie has been cast as Evil-Lyn while serving as the heroic He-Man will be Nicholas Galitzine. Most eyes will be on Leto’s work though, as Skeletor is one of the most memorable cartoon bad guys from the 1980’s and the role is resting in the hands of the versatile Leto. He-Man could probably be played by any decent handsome actor with just about the same results but Skeletor is a very important role that needs the intense precision someone like Leto is capable of bringing to the part.

While it’s anyone’s guess how Masters of the Universe will do from a financial perspective at the box-office, one can probably assume Leto will give the role of Skeletor the utmost attention it deserves and turn it into one of the most memorable baddies of 2026 at the movies. Brie will be working directly with Leto as the other evil principle character the movie will showcase. We’ll find out how they do when the film is finally released in just over a year and a half on June 5, 2026!
