Jacob Elordi Shakes Up the Best Supporting Actor Category with a Critics Choice Win for FRANKENSTEIN
Jacob Elordi Stirs Up the Tight Best Supporting Actor Race
Jacob Elordi has won Best Supporting Actor from the Critics Choice Association for his work in Netflix’s hit, Frankenstein.
Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein has done well with the Critics Choice tonight. It has won a couple of technical awards (production design and costume design) that were given off-stage, but many jaws dropped when Jacob Elordi won Best Supporting Actor from the CCA for his work in del Toro’s terrific film. Elordi certainly deserves the honor, but many had thought the CCA would go for a performer from One Battle After Another. Benicio Del Toro seemed to have the upper hand going into the ceremony tonight. However, now that Elordi has won, what does that mean for his Oscar chances? A lot. Last year’s winner, Kieran Culkin, swept just about every major award after his Critics Choice win and Elordi could repeat that type of success.
Don’t put Elordi at the top of your list of guaranteed winners just yet, though. We have to see if he gets an Actor (formerly known as Screen Actors Guild/SAG) nomination later this week. If he does get that nod, the sky is the limit for the very accomplished Elordi. Meanwhile, Amy Madigan nabbed Best Supporting Actress for Weapons in a victory that was slightly more predicted, but nevertheless, equally deserved. Madigan is certainly going into Oscar season strong with this CCA win under her belt.
Sinners has been cleaning up in the interim with honors for Miles Caton as Best Young Actor and the entire cast winning for the best ensemble. Delroy Lindo spoke on behalf of the talented cast and proved he, himself, deserves a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nod for his fine performance in Sinners. One Battle After Another hasn’t taken home much in terms of CCA victories, yet, but it expects to pick up steam later on with a potential win for…something, but Sinners still looks likely to be the victor for the night in terms of the Best Picture honor, but you never know.
Jacob Elordi was so good in Frankenstein. It was easy to dismiss him because of his young age (he’s under 30). The CCA has made the right decision in honoring his earnest work in del Toro’s masterfully conceived Netflix movie. Amy Madigan has a road paved to Oscar victory and we’ll see if other awards groups follow in the CCA’s footsteps and award her more nominations and wins. One thing’s for sure tonight: horror films are scoring incredibly well thus far. Check back for the Actor (SAG) nods later this week and tonight for the top CCA winners!
