Julie Delpy Turns Down Fourth Movie in BEFORE Film Series

Julie Delpy Says No To 4th Film in Loved Series

Julie Delpy has turned down writer/director Richard Linklater’s offer to make another film in the beloved Before series.

In early 1995, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy’s much cherished film, Before Sunrise, was released. Just how good was this film? It currently holds a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. 9 years later, a sequel, Before Sunset was released and scored an Oscar nod for Best Adapted Screenplay. Yet another 9 years passed, and the third film in the series, Before Midnight, was released and also received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapated Screenplay. Hawke and Delpy were co-writers and stars of both sequels and it seemed like another 9 years passing would bring a fourth film in the series but Julie Delpy has said no to Linklater’s offer.

Delpy has been struggling to get her own projects made. One such project, A Dazzling Display of Splendor, even has Emilia Clarke of “Game of Thrones” attached to the cast. However, that project has not been given a “go” yet. Delpy has become so frustrated with the film business that she’s even thought of going back to school and trying another profession. She believes she would make “a very good doctor.” She may be considering retirement from the movie business but is not retiring as of now. Delpy’s screenplay for A Dazzling Display of Splendor is about the pioneers of Hollywood.

The fact that the “Before” films were made themselves is something of a minor miracle. The first film earned only $5 million at the domestic box office in 1995. In 2004, the second picture also earned just $5 million in the US and Canada. In 2013, the third film in the series scored a slightly better $8 million at the domestic box-office. These films were never made just for the money. They have a lot of brains and heart and, as a result, have found many fans with the last film in the series, Before Midnight, earning an additional $12 million internationally suggesting that these pictures have worldwide appeal.

Ethan Hawke who played Jesse in the film series has acknowledged that, unfortunately, the fourth film in the “Before” pictures will not follow the 9 year pattern that the previous three have followed.

Delpy, who studied film at NYU, may be discouraged for now. Nevertheless, her character of Celine from these films has inspired us throughout the years with her strong, fierce independence and Delpy could change her mind over time.
