WHEN DARKNESS LOVES US: Bleecker Street Picks Up Forthcoming Emilia Clarke Tale of Terror

Bleecker Street Takes Rights to New Horror Film

Bleecker Street has obtained the rights to the new Emilia Clarke horror picture, When Darkness Loves Us, from acclaimed director, James Ashcroft.

Game of Thrones‘ own Emilia Clarke has an upcoming horror picture coming out soon called When Darkness Loves Us and the studio now behind it, Bleecker Street, will be releasing it in 2027, according to recent reports. Bleecker Street will seemingly have the rights to the film for all territories except New Zealand and Australia. James Ashcroft will be helming the picture which is based on a creepy 1980’s novella.

Ashcroft is known for his recent horror movie, The Rule of Jenny Pen, which received many good reviews for its stars, John Lithgow and Geoffrey Rush. In that film, Lithgow played a demented character who walked around with a baby puppet and did some very bad things to people in a retirement home.

This new scary movie from Bleecker Street and Ashcroft revolves around a woman who is immersed in darkness for 15 years when she finds herself trapped in an underground cave. She makes an attempt to return to civilization and reclaim her family in a complex tale of heart wrenching complexity that will feature Clarke, Natascha McElhone and Victoria Pedretti. Marlon Williams is also set to co-star in the picture.

Bleecker Street is a studio unafraid of taking risks with the movies they choose to release. Take into consideration their recent Mckenna Grace horror movie, Slanted. That March release centered on a female Asian teenager who changes her skin color to conform to her high school’s unattainable ideals with terrifying results all around.

Emilia Clarke is the perfect choice for the lead role as the woman who emerges from darkness after a 15-year bout of living in a hell-like underground dark world. Clarke has played serious roles in movies like 2016’s Me Before You and, of course, on Game of Thrones, but she has also excelled in romantic comedies like Last Christmas, a minor holiday-themed 2019 box-office hit. Clarke has the range to play a woman whose life takes an unexpected turn in the new Bleecker Street movie. This character seems like a fierce one for the accomplished actress who will, no doubt, excel in the part.

Bleecker Street usually has a hard time in terms of making their films successful from a financial standpoint, at least where movie theater box-office grosses are concerned. However, the studio is almost always noteworthy for its brave, sometimes great, movies like the drama, The Friend, which starred the always terrific Naomi Watts and Bill Murray and centered on a Great Dane dog. Expect this new Emilia Clarke-starrer to stir up some buzz when it finally lands a release date in 2027. Look for more news on the film’s exact release date when it is made available.
