WHAT HAPPENS LATER (2023): Meg Ryan and David Duchovny’s New Comedy Gets an Interim Agreement That Allows its Stars to Do Press

New Comedy Lands Interim Agreement So Stars Can Do Press

Meg Ryan‘s comeback romantic comedy, What Happens Later, has been granted an interim agreement by SAG-AFTRA so the stars can promote the film.

Bleecker Street Films may finally have a box-office winner on its hands. Their new release, What Happens Later, due November 3rd, will have the backing of the movie’s stars, Meg Ryan and David Duchovny who are now allowed to promote the picture. This film will release nationwide and there are two solid weeks ahead where the performers can do press that could help make the movie a hit and reverse Bleecker Street Films’ bad stroke of luck at the box-office.

Ryan and Duchovny play the roles of Willa and Bill, a couple with a romantic past who are trapped together at an airport during a snowstorm. Will they rekindle their feelings of love for one another or find out that they made the right decision in parting ways? Romantic comedy fans will want to buy their tickets to this one as soon as possible in order to see Ryan’s first leading film role in years. Ryan has been poised to make a comeback and if luck is on her side, this film will be the one to re-introduce her to the movie world.

Meg Ryan came on to the romantic comedy scene big-time when she faked an orgasm in public for Billy Crystal in When Harry Met Sally back in 1989. “I’ll have what she’s having,” a woman who overhears Ryan, states at the end of the scene. Director Rob Reiner was a genius and made the sequence so entertaining. Ryan may have learned a lot from Reiner and we’ll see in a couple of weeks as Ryan’s film is soon set to open. Ryan was behind the camera of the new film as its director as well as in front of it. Ryan has starred in enough romantic comedies to be able to helm them to perfection. Let’s see if she does.

Duchovny and Ryan will be promoting the movie on the radio, on TV, in the printed press and online thanks to the interim agreement that was granted to them by SAG. This decision that will work in their favor will be a life-saver for Ryan who was absent from cinema for many years and needs this movie to be successful. Ryan has come to a crossroads in her career and could use some viewership to get back into the hearts of the audiences she left years back.

Bleecker Street dropped the ball by releasing their great romantic comedy, Mr. Malcolm’s List, too early in the year back in the summer of 2022. That history of disappointing box-office returns cannot repeat itself for the good of the studio’s future and if Ryan and Duchovny get out there, they can make the relatively budgeted What Happens Later a modest hit. $25 million-plus would be a nice domestic gross for the film to make at the box-office and can now be a very real possibility given the SAG-AFTRA interim agreement’s provisions. What Happens Later could be that Ryan and Duchovny steam up the screen and audiences actually get to see them do so in the new film on the big screen where stars like these should be seen!
