U.S. Rights to Helen Mirren Film Sold

The U.S. rights to the upcoming Helen Mirren movie Golda have been obtained by Bleecker Street Films and ShivHans Pictures.

Oscar winning actress Helen Mirren is slated to star in an upcoming movie about Israel’s one and only female prime minister Golda Meir. It is appropriately titled Golda. Bleecker Street Films and ShivHans Pictures have purchased the local rights to the film which is to begin shooting in Europe this October.

Golda will be directed by Israeli filmmaker Guy Nattiv whose 2018 movie about racial tension, Skin, won an Academy Award for best short film. Nattiv is the perfect choice to direct a legendary performer like Mirren in a role that could earn her many more accolades upon the film’s release. The upcoming picture had been written by Florence Foster Jenkins scribe Nicholas Martin.

Mirren has been an actress to contend with for many years alternating between prestige projects like 2006’s The Queen (which was the role that won her the Best Actress Oscar) and more light-hearted fare like the Red pictures or the recent The Fast and the Furious films. She seems like a logical choice to play the tough but compassionate leader Golda Meir. The new picture, which is being told as a thriller, revolves around the choices Meir had to make during the Yom Kippur War from 1973.

Mirren has had much good fortune to select projects that garner critical acclaim and even if the movie she appears in falters (the Will Smith critical and box-office disappointment Collateral Beauty from 2016 comes to mind), she always emerges unscathed. Her role as the controversial leader Meir has many people in great anticipation with some hopeful that she may receive nominations for the part.

Mirren was most recently seen in F9: The Fast Saga playing opposite Vin Diesel. Many believed Mirren and Diesel’s scene together in the film was one of the most fun moments in the picture. It seems Mirren can move from a role in an indie to one in a blockbuster with virtually no problems at all.

Bleecker Street Films is known for its involvement in quality pictures. This year alone, they’ve had two high profile releases that have garnered attention. Together Together was one of the most critically acclaimed indies of the year so far and Dream Horse received accolades for the performance by Toni Collette that the picture showcased. ShivHans Pictures is the company behind the recent Liam Neeson Netflix picture, The Ice Road.
