JUROR #2 (2024): Clint Eastwood’s Latest Film Poised to Get Lost in the Year-End Shuffle

Clint Eastwood Movie Set to Premiere with Little Fanfare

Director Clint Eastwood‘s latest movie, Juror #2, will be opening in a small theatrical release next week with no current plans by its studio to release it any wider.

Clint Eastwood used to be synonymous with Oscar-bait movies like Unforgiven, Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby. Flags of Our Fathers was one of his more ambitious projects that didn’t quite take off at the Academy Awards but was well-received otherwise. Eastwood bombed out at the box-office with a sort of Western called Cry Macho which faltered partly due to the pandemic and, now, the studio of that film and his new film, Warner Bros., isn’t taking any more big risks for the high-profile director. That latest Eastwood project, Juror #2, sounded great on paper with a cast that includes Kiefer Sutherland, Toni Collette, J.K. Simmons, Zoey Deutch and star Nicholas Hoult. But, it may not be any good if Warner Bros.’ new theatrical release strategy for the film is any indication. In short, there isn’t much of one.

When it was announced that a courtroom thriller would be the latest (and, perhaps, last) Eastwood film, people were curious and news was all over the internet during the film’s production. Now, Warner Bros. plans on releasing it in about 50 domestic theaters and then, after that, it will most likely fade into oblivion. Not good news for the eagerly awaited Juror #2 at all but the reviews still haven’t come out which could either save or kill the film’s chances of success.

Don’t let this news fool you in regards to the quality of Juror #2. When 2003’s Mystic River came out, Warner Bros. didn’t pay it much mind while they focused on their The Matrix sequels. Mystic River went on to become a box-office success and Oscar-winning film in multiple categories, including Best Actor (Sean Penn). Warner Bros. seems focused on other projects this year as well with little faith in the usually reliable Eastwood’s latest project. While the studio isn’t banking on a hit, perhaps, potential audiences shouldn’t give up on it quite yet. At least not until the reviews come out.

Courtroom dramas can be a hard sell. Anatomy of a Fall barely registered at the domestic box-office with a mere $5 million take. That film did much better internationally but, here in the States, courtroom movies seem to be “old hat” for movie-going audiences. Just because Eastwood’s latest may be traditional and old school still doesn’t mean it’s a bad film.

Eastwood isn’t going to be claiming any Oscars for Juror #2 unless a major miracle happens but the film could be worthy. Financial success and artistic merits are two different things and just because Warner Bros. probably doesn’t believe in the film financially, doesn’t mean the film is without value to fans of the director and the picture’s distinguished cast. However, the news that Warner Bros. will not be pushing the film for Oscars doesn’t bode well for its long term prospects.
