JUROR #2 (2024): Clint Eastwood’s Oscar Bait Project Slated for AFI FEST and a Theatrical Release
Clint Eastwood’s Latest Directorial Effort Soon to Premiere at AFI
Director Clint Eastwood‘s new film, Juror #2, will premiere at the AFI FEST on October 27th right before its limited theatrical release on November 1st.
Clint Eastwood is still making movies and his latest, Juror #2, is positioned as a potential candidate for Oscar nominations this year as it will be released in early November. This Warner Bros film will have its world premiere at AFI which worked well for Eastwood’s 2014 Oscar-nominated Bradley Cooper drama, American Sniper. Juror #2 will mark the latest Eastwood film world premiere at AFI and the picture will close the festival. Other movies that premiered there were J. Edgar and Richard Jewell.
Eastwood may have had some Academy Award winners in the past like Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby but his latest may not be enough to make it into the Oscar race for Best Picture given the competitive nature of the year in film. Still, Eastwood has been known to surprise with his films and one can never disqualify his work as potentially deserving of awards consideration.
The 94-year-old Eastwood’s new film is about a man, Justin Kemp (Nicholas Hoult), who comes into a major dilemma when he becomes a juror in a murder trial. This film co-stars heavy hitters like J.K. Simmons, Toni Collette, Zoey Deutch and Kiefer Sutherland, to name just a few of the cast members who are on board the project.
With a limited release strategy to kick off the film, the situation will help build word of mouth which should lead to a larger theater count for the picture. Eastwood hasn’t had a major hit these days with movies like Richard Jewell and Cry Macho under-performing at the domestic box-office with just $22 and $10 million in ticket sales for those aforementioned films. One could probably chalk a lot of the latter film’s disappointment up to the pandemic which kept older movie-goers home at the time it was released in 2021.
Eastwood made Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby which were championed at the Oscars and he also made masterpieces like Mystic River which garnered Sean Penn an Academy Award for Best Actor. When looking at the cast of Juror #2, one can pick J.K. Simmons as, perhaps, the most likely to get an Oscar nod out of the film’s cast members but that’s speculative right now as the film hasn’t been reviewed by major critics yet who would determine if Simmons’ role is, indeed, the highlight of the new Eastwood thriller. Who could disqualify Collette as the other potential award nominee as she’s been nominated before, herself? That AFI premiere will answer a lot of questions in regards to the quality of Juror #2 and its Oscar prospects. Right now, the compelling premise of the new film can assure us that moviegoers will be anticipating seeing what could be Eastwood’s last hurrah as a filmmaker.
