MacGyver Revival TV Series Canceled By CBS

MacGyver‘s days on the case for CBS are coming to an end.

The network announced late Wednesday that the procedural reboot starring Lucas Till (X-Men: First Class) will close out after its current fifth season ends. The series finale will air April 30 on CBS.

“All of us at CBS are extremely grateful for the incredible work and dedication from Lucas and the rest of the cast, as well as [showrunner] Monica [Macer], the writers and the entire crew,” said CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl. “The MacGyver team traveled far and wide to repeatedly save the world with little more than bubble gum and a paper clip and made this show distinctly their own. We’re gratified we get to give this dedicated and loyal fan base the opportunity to say goodbye to their favorite characters in the thoughtful manner this series deserves.”

MacGyver becomes the latest CBS series to end this season. The ViacomCBS-owned broadcaster is also ending Chuck Lorre comedy Mom (for which star Allison Janney won two Emmys for Best Supporting Actress In Comedy) as well as NCIS spinoff NCIS: New Orleans starring Scott Bakula. The network’s new pickups for the 2021-22 season include a limited series revival of CSI with original stars William Petersen and Jorja Fox reprising their roles, FBI spinoff FBI: International and single-camera comedy Ghosts, with NCIS: Hawaii also expected to get a green light.

“Since coming on board to MacGyver last year, I have been amazed by the devotion and enthusiasm of this remarkable cast and crew, as well as the loyal fans,” said Macer, who took over showrunning duties after creator Peter Lenkov was fired following allegations of verbal harassment and creating a toxic workplace on shows including the Till starrer, Hawaii Five-O, and the revival of Magnum P.I. “My gratitude goes out to [stars] Lucas, Tristin [Mays], Justin [Hires], Meredith [Eaton], Levy [Tran] and [Henry] Ian [Cusick], who put everything they have into our show, specifically for the fans.  We can’t wait for them to see our spectacular final episodes and the adventures that still await for Mac and the team at the Phoenix.”

Produced by CBS Studios and Lionsgate, the reboot also counts David Straiton, James Wan, Henry Winkler, Lee David Zlotoff and Michael Clear as exec producers.
