Francis Ford Coppola’s Offbeat New Film will be in Competition at Cannes

Megalopolis, a bold experiment in film-making directed by Francis Ford Coppola, will be making its way into the competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

An expensive, star-studded new vehicle from Francis Ford Coppola, Megalopolis, has obtained a gala spot to premiere on May 17th at Cannes. One could virtually fill up the space required for this article by naming members of Coppola’s new film’s amazing cast. Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Dustin Hoffman, Forest Whitaker, Talia Shire and Jason Schwartzman are arguably some of the biggest names on board but there are many other big-name performers playing in the picture.

Coppola made this new film as a labor of love if you consider the $100 million of personal money that the director used to fuel the project and complete it. The backstory of the film has been almost as interesting as the film itself is probably going to be. Recently, it was mentioned that some major studios weren’t really interested in backing the movie’s theatrical release then the news of its Cannes premiere arose and more than a few eyebrows were certainly raised.

It is going to be thrilling for fans of the acclaimed The Godfather film director to see his new movie open at such a prestigious event. This movie was a year-and-a-half (or so) in the making before being shown to potential exhibitors on March 28th earlier this year. Set in a spin-off of New York called “New Rome,” Megalopolis is a vision that only a genius like Coppola could achieve and it’s going to be an experience to see how the film does with Cannes Film Festival audiences. Will it receive a standing ovation that goes on for 10-minutes or more? Given the magnitude of the director, that could most certainly be a potential scenario.

Politics is a grand theme to be found in Megalopolis and how well audiences enjoy the picture could depend on how open a mind they go into the film with. While the whole slate of Cannes Film Festival movies has yet to be revealed, the reception most film buffs will be waiting for is going to be that for Megalopolis.

It was previously announced that Aubrey Plaza is part of the tremendous cast of the upcoming Coppola picture. Plaza is an actress who has been waiting for her moment to shine in a cinematic triumph. Could this be the movie to catapult her to stardom? While some studios have apparently yet to view Megalopolis as such a triumph, there are plenty of film connoisseurs  who seem ready to nominate Coppola for awards simply for the grand scope of his ambitious project. It could be safe to say that with Megalopolis, Coppola has proven himself to be the biggest risk-taker in the history of movie-making. Let’s see how the effort pays off next month at Cannes.
