Aubrey Plaza Cast in New Film from the Director of The Godfather

Quirky actress Aubrey Plaza has joined the cast of the new upcoming film from the legendary Francis Ford Coppola, Megalopolis.

She’s currently starring in a film festival “darling” from this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Emily the Criminal which has caught the attention of newcomers to her work. It’s Aubrey Plaza who stunned the movie world when she co-starred in the Adam Sandler dramedy, Funny People back in 2009. She’s been working steadily ever since, and her latest project is the Francis Ford Coppola forthcoming movie titled Megalopolis.

In Megalopolis, Plaza has joined a powerhouse cast that includes Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel (now a leading lady in her own right with her role in this week’s release, The Invitation) and Jon Voight, to name a few. Coppola will be helming the picture from a script that he wrote. It is said to be a story of epic proportions surrounding love and politics. It has a generous budget just shy of $100 million. With heavy hitters such as Driver and Whitaker on board, it’s bound to be a project which will raise eyebrows in Hollywood. The addition of Plaza makes it a curiosity piece for fans of independent cinema.

Plaza has branched out into Hollywood movies but is known best for her work in independent gems like the great 2017 film, Ingrid Goes West where she played opposite the now megastar, Elizabeth Olsen. That 2017 film cast Plaza perfectly as a loser who yearns to get close to a popular young woman and begins to stalk her. Plaza appeared in Child’s Play in 2019, a horror movie remake that pitted Plaza’s character against the evil “Chucky” doll.

However, Plaza is essentially an integral “queen” of independent cinema. She made waves for herself playing in the acclaimed 2012 indie movie, Safety Not Guaranteed. Recently, she also appeared in the just released, Spin Me Round which played at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival. That movie was directed by Jeff Baena who is known for directing one of Plaza’s most known indie roles (despite its low box-office take) which was in the zombie comedy Life After Beth from 2014. Baena and Plaza later married.

Aubrey Plaza also has the distinction of having played in a great movie from 2010 called Scott Pilgrim vs. the World which certainly helped earn her stripes as one of the most acclaimed offbeat movie actresses in Hollywood today. Working with Francis Ford Coppola has certainly gotten her fans to start buzzing about their upcoming movie together, Megalopolis. Keep your eyes open for this one, folks!
