HOME ECONOMICS: Julia Roberts Cast in Upcoming Literary Adaptation
Julia Roberts Will Be in New Katy Hays Book-Based Film
Julia Roberts has just landed her next big role with a featured turn in Sony‘s 3000 Pictures’ upcoming adaptation of Katy Hays‘ Home Economics.
Whether you loved or hated Julia Roberts’ controversial last picture, After the Hunt, one thing was made abundantly clear by the movie: Roberts is coming for another Oscar nomination very soon. That may happen with her part in the forthcoming film, Home Economics, which is based on a highly anticipated novel by Katy Hays. That book isn’t due out until 2027, but Roberts has already become attached to the film adaptation.
Roberts needs no introduction. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for her dramatic turn in last year’s After the Hunt and made a career out of playing strong female characters in films like the hits, Pretty Woman and Erin Brockovich. Roberts won the Oscar for Best Actress for her fierce performance in the latter film.
Hays is a The New York Times best-selling author. She wrote The Cloisters and Saltwater. Kirkus Reviews wasn’t overly impressed with The Cloisters, but gave a positive review to Saltwater. Home Economics is expected to be at the same quality level as 2025’s Saltwater was. Sony’s 3000 Pictures is handling the film version of Home Economics that is set to star the versatile Roberts. Hays will be an executive producer and Roberts, herself, will co-produce.
While we don’t know much about the plot of the book or the movie, literary adaptations like It Ends with Us have proven profitable for the studio so it’s not a surprise Sony jumped on the opportunity to cast Roberts in a movie version of the book.
Julia Roberts was deemed “America’s sweetheart” ever since her early work in Mystic Pizza and Steel Magnolias. She reclaimed that title again at middle-age with her work in the winning literary-based drama, Eat, Pray, Love. Recently, she wowed viewers in After the Hunt, the controversial sexual harassment drama that played at the New York Film Festival last fall as the opening night feature. After the Hunt didn’t truly gel at the box-office, but Roberts received almost unanimous acclaim for her work in the picture.
Home Economics will be a high-profile project as both a book and a film. With Roberts on board the upcoming movie, it is likely the quality of the film will be quite strong. Roberts has several Oscar nominations under her belt, and scored supporting nods for both Steel Magnolias and August: Osage County. Look for more news on this exciting literary film project as it is made available. Expect an intriguing supporting cast to be showcased alongside Roberts in the upcoming feature as well.
