MINECRAFT 2 (2027): Kirsten Dunst Joins Cast of the Sequel to A MINECRAFT MOVIE
Kirsten Dunst Cast as Alex in Minecraft 2
Kirsten Dunst has been cast as Alex in the upcoming sequel to the wildly successful video game picture, A Minecraft Movie.
The Oscar-nominated star of The Power of the Dog from 2021, Kirsten Dunst, has signed on to play Alex, one of the popular characters from the Minecraft video games, in a sequel to a 2025 box-office hit which is tentatively called Minecraft 2. Dunst was recently seen in successful performances in hit movies like Civil War and Roofman.
Dunst is perhaps best known for her roles in the early Spider-Man movies that came out early in the 2000’s. She starred opposite Tobey Maguire in those pictures, but she originally came on to the scene with dramatic roles in hit movies like Interview with the Vampire and Little Women back in 1994.
Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) will be back on board to helm Minecraft 2 after the success of the first Minecraft movie at the box-office. Stars Jack Black (who played Steve in the first Minecraft film), Jason Momoa and Jennifer Coolidge are also said to be in talks to reprise their roles in the forthcoming sequel which is due out on July 23, 2027 from Legendary and Warner Bros. The first Minecraft earned nearly $1 billion worldwide with $424 million of its grosses coming from its domestic release. It earned a “B+” CinemaScore.
Coolidge had many funny scenes in the first Minecraft movie and her return would be a terrific addition to the series as fans laughed out loud at almost each and every moment she appeared in the original picture. Momoa played against his action hero type in a more family friendly role in the 2025 original movie.
Kirsten Dunst is a frequent Sofia Coppola collaborator who has made films with Coppola such as The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette, to name just a couple. She is an inspired choice to play Alex and to star opposite the likes of Momoa and Black who made the first film such a fun experience to behold for less demanding adult moviegoers and kids of almost all ages.
Many don’t expect that Dunst will earn any Oscar nominations for her fun work as Alex in Minecraft 2, but it will be nice for the actress to put a hit blockbuster movie on her resume as films like Civil War and Roofman, while good, didn’t muster up the kind of box-office they could have. Civil War was definitely a bigger hit than Roofman, but Minecraft 2 will probably make what Civil War made in total at the domestic box-office in just its first few days of release, if not sooner.
