THE JETSONS: Jim Carrey in Talks To Appear in a Live-Action Film Adaptation of Popular Cartoon Series
Jim Carrey To Headline The Jetsons Movie
Jim Carrey is in negotiations to star in a live-action The Jetsons movie which is slated to be made for Warner Bros.
A wildly popular television cartoon back in the 1960’s, 70’s, 80’s and early 1990’s was “The Jetsons.” Set in a future with flying cars and robots who do our chores, the show was one of the most successful cartoons of its time. Unfortunately, that success didn’t translate to the movies with the animated film, Jetsons: The Movie, barely getting scraps at the box-office back in 1990 with a mere $20 million domestic gross. Now, some 35 years later, Jim Carrey has been brought in to discuss appearing in a live-action version of the animated show. Carrey brings years of experience to the table, having appeared in classic films like The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. More recently, he’s appeared in the family-friendly Sonic the Hedgehog movies. Those films have done quite well at the box-office these days.
Carrey is expected to play the patriarch of the Jetson family, George Jetson. George had a wife named Jane, his boy was called Elroy and Jane was his daughter. Rosey was the name of the robot maid who cleaned up after The Jetson family. Astro was the name of the Jetsons’ family dog.
Colin Trevorrow is slated to be helming the upcoming movie version of The Jetsons. Trevorrow is best known for his work on the dinosaur action picture, Jurassic World, although he has also directed indies such as Safety Not Guaranteed, the Aubrey Plaza dramedy from 2012.
Jim Carrey burst onto the scene with his role(s) on TV’s “In Living Color.” He ended up making Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and its sequel for Warner Bros. which were both big cash grabs. He also appeared in the vampire comedy, Once Bitten, earlier on in his career. By the mid-1990’s, he was a force to contend with, starring in films like The Mask and Dumb and Dumber. He received Golden Globe nods for his performances in the dramatic movies, The Truman Show and Man on the Moon. Carrey later went on to play in a Kick-Ass action movie, but disappeared from the spotlight for a while.
The Jetsons is a fun and still relevant animated show. With clever innovations, the cartoon suggested possibilities which have started to come into fruition over the years albeit not as significantly as the original show suggested. We are still not flying around in cars although the TV series alluded to that possibility. Carrey will most likely make a good George Jetson, but they will have to put the standing up small piece of hair on him to make the movie feel authentic and faithful to the original series.
