Kate Winslet Set to Star in THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM

Kate Winslet To Play Female Lead Role in new LOTR Movie

Oscar-winner Kate Winslet has been revealed to be the female lead in the upcoming film from Andy Serkis, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

Andy Serkis will be directing a new The Lord of the Rings picture and The Reader star, Kate Winslet, has been cast in the film’s pivotal leading female role. Winslet just recently found herself behind the camera for the film Goodbye June which was on Netflix this past holiday season. While the results were mixed, it was admirable to see Winslet make an earnest attempt at a dramatic holiday-themed dramedy. Winslet found herself in New Zealand recently to film her scenes for Serkis’ The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Winslet made one of her earliest pictures, Heavenly Creatures, in New Zealand over 30 years ago. That was the movie that helped propel her to her big roles in hits like Sense and Sensibility and Titanic.

Winslet won her Best Actress Academy Award for her heart-wrenching work in The Reader and has starred in countless masterpieces which she made prior to her Oscar win like Titanic and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. She’s also known for her audience-loved romantic comedy, The Holiday. Winslet has also been a performer in the Avatar films franchise.

Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen and Serkis himself will be taking over the central male roles in the new The Lord of the Rings film. Serkis will play the intriguing and complex tragic creature Gollum while Wood will serve as Frodo Baggins again and McKellen will portray Gandalf for another round. The film’s story will focus on the efforts by Aragorn to capture the memorable Gollum. The timeline the film is on is somewhere between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Fans of these films will most likely know where the movie fits in within these layered stories.

When Winslet re-teamed with her Titanic co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio for Revolutionary Road, the results weren’t great at the box-office due to the very depressing nature of the second film Winslet starred in with the former Titanic heartthrob. In fact their second collaboration, which was initially released in 2008, only grossed $22 million domestically. It was the highly acclaimed, The Reader, that was released the same year as Revolutionary Road that helped Winslet save face as it grossed north of $30 million at the domestic box-office due to its Oscar buzz

Winslet has also spoken of returning to HBO’s acclaimed Mare of Easttown for a second season. Many most likely expect her work in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum to be her usual powerhouse type of performance, but this is the first huge blockbuster we may actually get to see Winslet on-screen looking like Winslet. In the Avatar movies, she was unrecognizable despite her fine work in those films. We’ll see how her performance will ultimately work out from that perspective when the new The Lord of the Rings film from Warner Bros. is released in 2027.
