Netflix Promises Sequel to The Gray Man

Despite receiving a mixed critical response, the new Netflix movie, The Gray Man, will be getting both a sequel and a spin-off project.

The Gray Man is a critic proof hit. Even though the movie holds just a 47% Rotten Tomatoes score, Netflix is so encouraged by the positive reception of the movie by audiences that the streamer has declared there will be not only a sequel, but a spin-off as well. Ryan Gosling and filmmakers Anthony and Joe Russo will be back on board the second film in the series. Co-writer of the new just released The Gray Man picture, Stephen McFeely, will be penning the sequel.

This news suggests that a movie doesn’t need to receive unanimously perfect reviews to find an audience. People liked the new picture and it’s that simple. A movie doesn’t need to always necessarily have a logical, thought-provoking plot to hook audiences and the action scenes in the new picture were undeniably done well from a technical standpoint. Also, the timing of the new movie as a summer blockbuster which you could watch at home, was simply perfect. It was a great alternative to going to crowded theaters where COVID could still possibly be spread.

Ryan Gosling’s return to the franchise came as a bit of a surprise to some people. The actor is known to have just worked on the much different new Barbie film and, in the past, he has received much acclaim for his dramatic Oscar-caliber performances. However, perhaps a sequel would suit Gosling well and make him the type of name brand action hero that appeals across the board to different types of audiences.

Mark Greaney wrote the popular The Gray Man book series the new picture was based on. Not much is known about the exact details regarding the spin-off of the films that Netflix is also working on beside the sequel. It will definitely be different from the movie, though, according to sources.

Some theaters are also currently playing The Gray Man right now, so if you love seeing an action picture on the big screen, you may want to take the opportunity to see it that way. For most folks, though, the Netflix movie is satisfying the majority of the general public’s tastes. Critics will always find something to nitpick about so pay them little mind if you like action-packed roller coaster rides.

As someone who found flaws with The Gray Man, I am still excited at the prospect of a sequel because Gosling is, undeniably, just the type of actor who demands attention in everything that he does. Logic doesn’t always matter to every day streaming audiences if they’re at the edge of their seats and I can certainly see the movie’s appeal.
