NEW YORK COMIC CON 2024 – DAY THREE: James Gunn, CREATURE COMMANDOS, Takashi Yamazaki, GODZILLA MINUS ONE, RUROUNI KENSHIN: KYOTO DISTURBANCE and More [NYCC 2024]
Creature Commandos, Godzilla & Rurouni Kenshin Panels from NYCC 24
New York Comic Con Day Three Write Up on MAX‘s Creature Commandos, Godzilla and Crunchyroll‘s Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Disturbance.
James Gunn and some of the biggest stars from MAX‘s upcoming animated show, Creature Commandos, were on hand at Comic Con 2024 on Day Three. Among these performers were Maria Bakalova, Sean Gunn, Frank Grillo, David Harbour and Zoë Chao. James Gunn stated this was his first New York Comic Con and that he believes this new show is among the very best work he has ever done, if not the best. James Gunn wanted to reiterate that this is not just another Guardians of the Galaxy spin-off type of show. One of the big takeaways from this panel was that Creature Commandos will be a very adult show with sometimes humorous sex scenes sprinkled into the action. Chao plays what is known as a Fish Lady, Nina Mazursky, and this character was referenced several times throughout the panel. It appears she eats in a very creative way as her character seemingly wears a fish bowl over her head. David Harbour will be serving as Eric Frankenstein while Sean Gunn is going to be doing the voice-over work for G.I. Robot. Grillo will be doing the voice of Rick Flag Sr. Bakalova will be playing Ilana Rostovic. Harbour seems to have one of the most featured roles on the program and the actor reveled in talking about his part on the show. The Creature Commandos panel revealed a trailer that looks absolutely hysterical and the cast brought a lot of terrific, wild energy to NYCC 2024. Viola Davis who plays Amanda Waller in the show wasn’t at the event but James Gunn loved working with her and, again, the filmmaker made it clear that this new show is not just for fans of The Suicide Squad although some of the characters overlap. Creature Commandos will be a show that will work as a stand-alone which anyone and everyone can enjoy, as long as they’re old enough to watch. It will premiere December 5th on MAX.
The Oscar-winning (for Best Visual Effects) film Godzilla Minus One was showcased in Comic Con‘s 70 Years of Godzilla panel. Director Takashi Yamazaki was on hand to discuss his work on the award-winning film after the audience was treated to clips from Godzilla films of the past 70 years which simply brought down the house with waves of applause following the footage. Some fun tidbits included the fact that Godzilla is somewhat modeled after Yamazaki’s cat in terms of some of the ways Godzilla moves and looks. Yamazaki didn’t prepare a speech at the Academy Awards although he believed he had a 50/50 shot of winning the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. It was revealed that Godzilla Minus One will be re-released in theaters on November 1st in correspondence with the 70th anniversary of Godzilla. Some behind the scenes footage of how the Oscar-winning visual effects came to be were displayed at Comic Con and will be available upon the film’s re-release. The audience was also treated to new artwork for the movie’s poster which will be used for advertising its re-release.
The other panel from Day Three that I saw was for Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Disturbance which is the title of the Crunchyroll Japanese animated TV show’s second season. This season will offer more humor than usual and had some fun moments where cultural and class differences were displayed and discussed in the two episodes that were shown at Comic Con. On hand at the panel were the film’s two main voice-over talents, Howard Wang and Risa Mei, who are the English voice-over talent for the heroes on the animated program, Kenshin Himura and Kaoru Kamiya. Mei pointed out how the new season is called Kyoto Disturbance which suggests some of the heaviness of the show which Mei also added will be lightened up by humor this season. Wang and Mei are two very talented vocal artists and, Mei, in particular, is full of energy that makes her a true force to contend with. It was a pleasure seeing two very dedicated talents like this pair at this year’s event. Rurouni Kenshin fans are in for a treat.
In conclusion of Day Three, it must be said these were three wonderfully conceived panels that managed to both inform and entertain. There’s nothing like seeing James Gunn talk at a convention and he gleefully teased his Supergirl and Superman upcoming projects. There was even a joke about a trailer for the upcoming movie, Superman. But, that didn’t happen. That was about the only thing that didn’t happen at this year’s exciting Comic Con panels.
