Leslye Headland set to Write New Star Wars Disney+ TV Series

RUSSIAN DOLL and SLEEPING WITH OTHER PEOPLE director Leslye Headland is set to write and showrun a Star Wars series for Disney Plus, a “female centric” take on the world initially steeped in deeply masculine tradition. This is a progressive step for Disney’s ongoing rebranding of the Star Wars universe considering the smash success of RUSSIAN DOLL, which Headland spearheaded as a writer and director, taking home three Emmys, noting its largely female writing team and feminist messages and audience. Headland’s previous work includes working on shows TERRIERS, BLUNT TALK, SMILF, BLACK MONDAY, and a series of plays titled “Seven Deadly Plays” which included an appearance from Kirsten Dunst.

Little is known so far about the context of the series or its release date. Due to complications caused by the coronavirus, it is unlikely to start shooting until at least 2021, sources claim. With the release of THE RISE OF SKYWALKER in 2019 completing the JJ Abrams film reboot of Star Wars, and the success of the Disney Plus series THE MANDALORIAN launching the meme sensation baby yoda, Disney has a lot to celebrate with the accumulation of the Star Wars franchise. While Disney Plus already has two other Star Wars series underway, one starring Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, the excitement surrounding Headland’s take on the Star Wars universe from female fans has already created a spark online.

Headland’s involvement with the Star Wars universe is a notable step from Disney in the realm of social justice and minority representation. Since the backlash against the initial reboot’s inclusion of female protagonist Rey played by Daisy Ridley, and appearances by John Boyega and later Kellie Marie Tran in THE LAST JEDI, there has been much improvement by Disney to redirect the image of Star Wars to fit a more modern image.
