THE MANDALORIAN: Gina Carano Released From Her Lucasfilm Contract; Will No Longer Appear in Any STAR WARS Projects

Gina Carano No Longer Employed by Lucasfilm

The Mandalorian actress and former MMA fighter Gina Carano is no longer employed by Lucasfilm and will not be appearing in any future Star Wars TV series or films. Following the publication of dubious statements on Gina Carano’s Instagram account deemed by some to be inflammatory and anti-semitic, later deleted by her, captured by observers before the deletion, and spread over social media with the hashtag #FireGinaCarano, Lucasfilm has released Gina Carano from her contract.

Lucasfilm released this statement about the parting of ways between Carano and Lucasfilm:

Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.

The other social media posts alluded to by the statement include remarks about Covid-19, personal pronouns, and others. These previous comments had Carano on thin ice but they weren’t enough to tip any scale against the pugnacious actress who’d brought a fan-favorite character to life in the Disney Cinematic Universe.

The comment that surfaced yesterday finally tipped the scale against Carano with Lucasfilm, who has released and quickly distanced itself, from the actress.

It was rumored that Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic, a spin-off TV series from The Mandalorian, would possibly star Gina Carano’s Cara Dune. If true, that is no longer the case, at least not with Gina Carano in the role of Cara Dune.

Perhaps the Cara Dune role will be recast with a new actress on The Mandalorian and in Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic. Or the character may simply be killed off off-screen and replaced with a new, strong female character.

Whatever happens, this has all been an unfortunate situation.

The most vexing part of this situation: Gina Carano lucked-out and got a part in one of the most rewarding science fiction TV series on the air. Why potentially jeopardize that and your growing fame by exercising your freedom of speech in such a deleterious way? Why say anything? Why not just be happy for the opportunity Lucasfilm gave you, be silent, and humble, especially in the Age of Cancel Culture? Why take the risk when so much is at stake?

I don’t get it. Do you?
