Saw 10 Eyeing a Release for Halloween 2023

Lionsgate has made the announcement that a tenth film in the hugely popular Saw franchise will be aiming for a release on October 27, 2023.

After Spiral: From the Book of Saw failed to ignite the box-office due to a poorly timed theatrical release during the pandemic, Lionsgate is not giving up on the Saw series. Director Kevin Greutert will be helming the tenth movie in the mostly successful horror movie franchise. That’s good news for Saw fans because Greutert directed the absolute best film in the series, Saw VI, which intelligently took shots at medical insurance companies in-between its scenes of gore and guts.

Greutert also made the adequate but (obviously) wrongly titled, Saw: The Final Chapter. Back in 2010, I correctly predicted that the series would one day make a comeback and it did in 2017 with Jigsaw which earned a nice $38 million and revived the franchise which usually kept production costs reasonable in order to maximize profits. Jigsaw, just like (arguably) the best entry in the series, Saw VI, earned a “B” CinemaScore grade and proved audiences were still up for more “killer” traps and scary scenes that typically end in gore beyond a reasonable doubt.

Spiral: From the Book of Saw was released in 2021 and starred the always intriguing Chris Rock. It got an okay grade from CinemaScore: a “B-,” but the film wasn’t that much of a hit with pandemic weary moviegoers. That 2021 horrorfest grossed just $23 million at the domestic box-office but would have certainly done much better if the pandemic wasn’t happening at the time of its release. Lionsgate is ready to roll the dice one more time on this series which launched in 2004 with the original film, Saw. That movie came out of nowhere to gross an astonishing $56 million during the horror movie going Halloween season.

Although the best Saw movie, Saw VI, grossed only $27 million domestically, it has gone on to find a very appreciative audience throughout the years since its original release. There is a con in releasing Saw 10 so close to Halloween, however, and that is that the movie will most likely peter out at the box-office (if it releases in theaters) way before Thanksgiving which typically sees the release of blockbuster movies. Although Lionsgate’s strategy is most likely to score a “killer” opening weekend and make back their budget as quickly as possible, the key to box-office longevity is building on the holiday of Halloween by releasing a horror film as early in October as possible.

But, never mind. Saw 10 is certain to get fans of the series back to basics and will most likely get audiences hyped up during the months that will lead up to its release.
